THE SHOP'S RULES.
Tmd Futile In
th« Loo( Ban.
A small boy had thrown a stone
through the basement window, and
the landlady sent the maid of all
work around the corner to a gla-
ner's. There was only one corner
of the sheet of glass broken, but it
would have been unsafe to leave it.
"It will be IS," the glazier said,
looking the job over, and after a lit-
tle wrangling over the price the
landlady told him to go ahead.
When he was gone for the glass,
the landlady said to the girl:
"You Bee, I can got a glass for
tbat picture in the dining room out
of this and will be just that much
ahead.'
Then
fhere was a good deal of "clutter-
ing up" about the work, but it was
done finally, the glazier was paid
and went Ten minutes, later the
landlady went out to look at the
piece of glass that was left, but it
was gone.
"He took it with him," the girl
said.
"Well, go right over there and
bring it back," she said tartly.
"You knew I wanted the glass."
Th# girl was gone five minutes,
and ibe returned without it.
, "H* won't give it up. Ho says ac-
cording to the rules of the shop that
it belongs to him."
"The rules of the shop indeed!
I'll show him," and she put on her
bonnet with a little toss which look-
ed bad for the glazier.
But he stood his ground unex-
pactedly. There was the glass on
th6 counter, but he stood close over
it, protesting:
"It vhas der rules of der shop."
"Well, you'll see when my bus-,
band comes home," she said at last,
backing out of the door, but the
glasier only smiled.
Sure enough, the husband was
bant on having the glass.
"Come over and point it out to
me, and I'll fix him," he said dog-
gedly.
The glazier saw them coming,
but he was deflaDt.
"See here," began tho husband,
"you've stolon a picce of window
glass out of my house"—
"No, no. It vhas der rules of
der"- ■
"Hang the rules! Where iutlie
•glasst" turning to bis wlfo. She
pointed to it lying under a work-
bench. The husband reached for it
and started out of the shop.
In an instant the proprietor was
on the sidewalk, dancing on ono leg,
waving his arms and shouting:
"Bolice, bolice!"
Bather than face tho trouble the
man laid the gloss down, and tho
two left the shop, walking briskly
till they turned a corner.
"But just wait!" muttered tho lit-
tle woman.
Two dayB later thero was n ring
at the bell which tho landlady an-
swered. A boy in a tradesman's
blouse was hesitating in the door.
"Mr. Glazingstein wants the ham-
mer he loft here the other day."
"Oh, no," chuckled tho landlady;
, igf'it'B the rules of the shop that I
agMpr give hammers back when
flPny are left here."
The boy looked abashed.
"I'll tell you," said tho landlady.
"You go back and say that when
bo returns my glass we'll talk about
the hammer."
The boy went, and in a few min-
utes he came back with the glass.
"That's jnore like it," said the
landlady, taking the pane from him.
"Now go back and tell that old skin-
flint that I haven't seen his old ham-
mer I"
And she hadn't, for a little later
he saw the boy come out of a house
on the opposite side of the street
carrying the missing article.
But the glass is now in a picture
frame on her dining room wall.

Another correspondent suggests that

rather a wonder that the admiralty

"I gave it to you in a mouieut of

occasion to regret that I was so
thoughtless in such matters."
Of course she pictured that photo-

had offended her in some way, but

A Flying WVftf.
Almost any bright tiny hi rspring,
if you watch the fky diwtdy, you
will see faint V shaped objects go-
ing northward, high up in air. If
you live in the country, where ev-
erything is still, perhaps you can
also hear a distant "quack, quack."
For the V shaped object is a flock of
wild gcoHO or ducks flying to their
summer Iioiiich. Tho point of (he V
is always led by n»i experienced old
gander. Sometimes one or two of
the llock become separated from the
rest when they alight, as they often
do, on a mill pond or a stream.
Then they become bewildered and
fly around over the ground, making
a great outcry. This is always look
cd on aa a sign of u storm:
Usually these flocks follow up
some river, and occasionally they
drop down into a pond or stream to
rest and feed. Here is where the
sportsman watches for them.—-Chi-
