WORK FOR MINISTER younc.
According to advices received at
San Francisco, the Guatemalan gov-
ernment has committed an inex-
cusable outrage upon an American
citizen.
It seems that Mr. W. H> Argall,
an American citizen, owns some land
in Guatemala. Recently the jefe
politico of Guatemala appropriated
some of Argall's real estate, and
when the latter questioned the
legality of the proceeding.the jefe
threw him into prison for audacity.
Argall asked permission to see the
commandant, and the officer in
charge of the prison then caused
him to be brutally beaten.
Fortunately, General P. M. B.
Young, the American minister, heard By the month or year, the Spencer
of the outrage, end deeded th. ,S

release of the prisdner. The presi-
dent of Guatemala was appealed to, j
but Jae treated the request *ith coa*
tempt, and allowed Argali to remain
in confinement for twelve days. At
the end of that time the doors of the
American's dungeon were thrown
open.
General Young has written a full
report of the case and forwarded it
to Washington, and the matter is
now an international issuer It is to
be hoped that the state department
will take prompt and vigorous ac-
tion. The rights of American citi-
zens should be protected at any cost
in every land under the sun. In the
present instance our government
will have a valuable representative
on deck in the person of Minister
Young.
