Plans 14 Years to Reject Wife
When She Begs to Re-
turn; Asks Divorce.
Chicago, October 8.—For fourteen
years Fremont Brough Sholes, night
agent for the Northwestern railway,
has held aloft the lash of vengeance.
Fourteen years ago his wife, An-
nie Dale Easton Sholes, walked out
of the little home he had given her-
forever.
It burned down deep' in his soul
to lose little Annie Dale. There
may be a little consolatlou In
death, because death is the end of
everything. But to be left alone by
the Are that crackles cheerily no
more; to hear the hollow mocking
laughter of other men's wives, to
gaze wistfully and woefully after oth-
er fellows with helpmeets that snug-
gle up under their elbows—O, that's
the stuff that sears the souls of
saints and slnnerB.
Time Harden* Heart.
Well, that was fourteen years ago.
Time—that grand old porous plaster
for pale people—slowly and surely
extracted the genial imaginings of
love, and in the place thereof in-
stilled a cardlasclerosis that for
graduate frigidity made a boral blast
look like the asphyxiating terror of
an Indian simoom.
She wanted to come back home-
in all probability. Tired of the
tempest of life, of being an object
for the hand of scorn to point its
slowly moving finger at, she yearned
for a siesta under the pain of true
forgiveness. Life was chill and
bare. But would he forgive?
A fine, sneering chance!
Take her back? No!
It could be .fourteen hundred
years, and she could never come
back. Let penance fall where pen-
ance is due. I will avenge, saith
the Lord—well, let him; so will 1!
Suit for Divorce.
So, with fourteen years of deser-
tion in his heart, Fremont Sholes
sued for divorce. A divorce to break
forever that bond, joined together
thus and so for man to break asun-
der.
Yesterday he got a letter. Ah!
Would he gloat over his final thrusl
at this deserter of husbands? Or
would he open it at all?
He tore open the envelope. The
letter said:
"Dear Fremont: 0, I thank you
so much! Now 1 can marry Mr. Sut-
ton. God bless you! "Dale."

"Cheer Up, Brother.
Take a Chew of STAR
and Forget It."
'HEY'LL never "get your
goat" if you have a
chew of STAR in your
cheek. You "forget it" the
minute you set your teeth
on the juicy STAR plug.
The naturally sweet leaf in STAR
is developed to an even deliciousness
throughout. This is retained to the
last chew by the three-quarter inch
thickness that can't dry out like a
thin plug. And every STAR plug
is always a full 16 ounce pound.
Men Who Chew
Are Men Who DO

If your woik keeps you from
smoking—chew STAR, if you're
smoking too much or chewing too
strong a tobacco—change off to
mild, mellow STAR.
