letter you state: "We

It? Why is this?" Many an-
swers could be given to this Ques-
tion, but the two paramount reasons
I will submit and at the same time
inform you of the stand that our
church takes. The first reason Is
that there are many leaders and
members of churches who do not
hold to the inspiration of the Bible.
These people are toleratedJhr their
churches, and so these churches
make themselves partakers of the
sin. Amid all this dismal din of dis-
loyal denial-of God's word, the voice
of ,the true confessional Lutheran
Church rings out clear as a clarion
for the inspiration of the Bible All
Scripture is given by inspiration of
God. 2 Tim. 3 16. Holy men of
God spake as they were moved by
the Holy Ghost. 2 Pet. 1:21. Not
in the words which man's wisdom

The second reason tor this spiri-
tual Indifference Is the one to which
you alao refer ta your letU
of proper Instruction. Thsre art too
denominations, that are
fectly satisfied with a soul"* conver-
sion outwardly signified hy the ahak
ing ot the minister1* band. I
peclally thinking of the greet revi-
vals, when people in a fit ot excite-
ment, and out ot tear ot the Devil
with the forked tall ud eleven hoofs,
get np and shout, "I am a Christian,
1 hare joined the Church." They tilde
Ik so easily, that the first thing you
know they slide oat Just as easily a*
they slid In As the thermometer
rises and fall* with the temperature,
so their prospects ot salvation rise
and fall with their feeling. Plainly
these poor people have no solid foun-
dation for the hope of their salva-
tlon. They are reslly on the anxious
bench as long as they live. If we
follow our feelings or notion* or
alleged relevatlon* of God, we will
be as a ship without rudder or an-
chor, a toy of tides and storms, we
will be led into baseless enthusiasm,
vain superstition, wild fanaticism.
Here I am thinking ot eo many of
our modern religions. The Lutheran
Church deslree to follow the Word of
God as we find It in the Bible, and
therefore has a system ot instruction,
which every one mutt take ,who de-
sires affiliation with the Church.
Thereby we are led into sound, solid,
sane, sober Christianity. Make the
written Word of God the foundation,
source, and rule ot faith and prac-
tice and you can be "ready always to
give answer to every sum that aak-
eth you a reason of hope that is in

Another cause tor spiritual Indif-
ference among many people Is the
tact that they look upon their hands
as the means ot grace. They "be-
Here In doing what is right,' an
put their trust In their own good
works. The foundaUon upon whteh
our church rests in this: "We eon-
elude that a man Is Justified by
faith without the deeds of the law"
Rom. S:S8.
Tls not by works ot righteousness
Which our own hands have done;
But we are saved by sovereign grace,
Abounding through Hi* Son.
Still others look tor their salta-
tion to God's eternal decree ot pro-
destination Islam, Fatalism, Cal-
vinism is the sad eource ot their com
fort "Whatever will bo will be.
If I am to be damned In spite of all
I may do, I will be damned, if I am
to be saved In spite of all I may do,
1 will be saved." If consistent, they
must fall into proud presumption or
deadening despair.
We must not look to our hands,
to our good works, for the means of
salvation; we must not look into
our hearts, Into the state ot our feel-
tag* for the assurancs of our salva-
tion; we must not try to look into
God's hidden eternal deereee for the
certainty of our salvation, ws realise
that we must look straight Into God's
Word for the knowledge of Ood*s
purpose Henee, we believe In a sys-
tematic study of His Word.
The astronomer does not took up

theran does not look up to sweep the
heavens to study God's mind and
heart, he looks down Into the Bible
and sees God's Heart beating
and throbbing tor him. He sees the
loving Father cradling His beloved
Son in Bethlehem's manger and lead-
Him to Gethsemane's agony and
Him to Calvary's cross. Look-
