Little mermaids
Staff photo by Dan Parker
From left, Julie Johnson, 10, and Gabi Hanmore, 8, portray mer-
maids in a stage production they put on with other children at H.G.
Olsen Elementary School on Friday, July 25. The play was part
of a summer program for children sponsored by the Port Aransas
schools and the city’s Parks and Recreation Department. Children
wrote the play (called “Indiana and Juliette - The Third Adven-
ture”), acted the parts, created the set and made their own cos-
tumes. The youngsters performed the play for younger kids taking
part in the summer program.

Texas shoppers get a break from
state and local sales taxes on Aug.
15,16 and 17 - the state’s annual tax
holiday. Lay-away plans can be used
again this year to take advantage of
the sales tax holiday.
The law exempts most clothing
and footwear priced under $100
from sales and use taxes, which
could save shoppers about $8 on
every $100 they spend.
Backpacks under $100 and used
by elementary and secondary stu-
dents are also exempt. A backpack
is a pack with straps one wears on
the back. The exemption during the
sales tax holiday includes backpacks
with wheels, provided they can also
be worn on the back like a traditional
backpack, and messenger bags. The
exemption does not include items
that are reasonably defined as lug-
gage, briefcases, athletic/duffle/gym
bags, computer bags, purses or
framed backpacks. Ten or fewer
backpacks can be purchased tax-free
at one time without providing an
exemption certificate to the seller.
State Comptroller Susan Combs
issued a word of caution to retail-
ers: “If you sell items that do not
qualify for the exemption, you may
not advertise or promise that you
will pay your customers’ sales tax.
Additionally, you are prohibited
from advertising that you will not
collect sales tax on items that do
not qualify. You may advertise that
tax is included in the sales price
of the taxable items that you sell,
however.”
For information on how to report
tax on these sales call toll free at
(800) 252-5555.

Immunizations for school, like it or
not, are mandatory.
Figuring out who needs what, and
when, is not for the faint of heart, and
is probably best left to the profession-
als. Chances are, if a child has been
under the care of a pediatrician on a
regular basis, his or her immuniza-
tions are updated. It is important to
double check, because schools will
not enroll students who do not have
the necessary vaccinations.
This year’s requirements are only
slightly different from last year, and
may not have relevance for every-
one.
Students entering pre-kindergarten
must have had:
•Three doses of hepatitis B
•Four doses of DTaP (diphtheria,
tetanus and acellular pertussis)
•Three doses of polio
•One dose of varicella (chicken-
pox)
•One dose of a measles-containing
vaccine (MMR-measles, mumps and
rubella)
•One dose of hepatitis A vaccine
(for Nueces County schools)
Students entering kindergarten
must have had the following:
•Five doses of DTaP (diphtheria,
tetanus and acellular pertussis)
•Four doses of polio
•Three doses of hepatitis B
•One dose of varicella (chicken-
pox)
•Two doses of a measles-contain-
ing vaccine (MMR-measles, mumps
and rubella)
•One dose of hepatitis A vaccine
(for Nueces County schools)
For students entering pre-kin-
dergarten, There are exceptions,
mainly regarding when doses were
given relative to the child’s fourth
birthday.
Students age 11 and 12 should
have boosters of DTaP and Polio
vaccinations 10 years after the last
vaccinations.
Immunizations themselves are not
enough, of course. Documentation
is required, and must come from the
doctor or the health department.
Anyone with questions about im-
munizations should contact his or
her child’s pediatrician. Information
also is available through the Texas
Department of State Health Services
Web site, www.dshsistate.tx.us.im-
munize.
