Mexico Poly Beaten;
Tangerine Bowl Next
Lamar Tech's bowl-
bound Cardinals wound up
regular season play Satur-
day afternoon in Mexico
City, waxing the Mexico
Poly Burros 62-22 in an
international outing.
Tech wound up with a
regular season of 7-2-1,
the two losses and tie being
in conference warfare.
The Redbirds were third
in the LSC race behind
champion Sam Houston
State and Texas A&I.
The s e as on is far from
closed for the Cardinals,
who now face a post-
season bowl game, the
Tangerine Bowl, Dec. 29
in Orlando, Fla. Lamar
will meet Middle Tenn-
essee State.
The Middle Tennessee
State Blue Raiders will be
meeting the Cards for the
second time in the history
of the two schools. The
Raiders downed Tech 27-0
at Beaumont in 1950.
Middle Tennessee finished
their regular season with
a heart-breaking loss to
arch rival Tennessee
Tech. The Eagles fought
through a 7-6 mud battle
with the Raiders to take
the Ohio Valley Confer-
ence crown.
The Raiders amassed a
7-3 s e ason record, with
wins over Austin Peay
State, Morehead State,
W e s t e rn Kentucky State,
Eastern Kentucky State,
Florence State, Murray
State and East Tennessee
State.
Boasting a potent offense,
MTS racked up 187 points
while holding oppoenets to
107, with a per game rush-
ing average of 191.8 yards
per game and a 137 yards
per game average passing.
F ullback Phil Grammer
led the rushers with a per
try average of 4.6 yards,
BILL VINCENT, 235 pound tackle from Morgan City,
Louisiana. Vincent is a senior and already holds
two varsity letters and is assured of a third this
year. He is the only member of the Cardinals to
come from outside the state of Texas. Vincent was
one of the mainstays in the line of Red 2 this year,
and will be hard to replace next year.
while quarterback Terry
Bailey led the passing with
3 7 of 71 completitons for
79 6 yards. Bailey is not
scheduled to start in the
Bowl game however, with
Jerry Pearson receiving
the nod at the position.
Lamar suffered two in-
juries in the Mexico con-
test . Guard Danny Gardner
suffered a twisted ankle,
and will be ready to go by
the time workouts resume,
while Little All-America
candidate Bobby Jancik had
his knee knocked out of
place, and the injury may
keep the athlete out of
workouts before the big
game.
Mexico Poly received the
open ing kickoff and were
held to downs. Tech then
took over the football with
quarterback Win dell
Hebert hitting halfback
Richard P re jean for 17
yards to move the ball past
the mid-field stripe.
Winding up his passing arm
again, Hebert connected on
two s t r a ight to Armour
M c M anus, with John Kent
smashing over for the
touchdown from 18 yards
out. Walter Smith added
his first of seven extra
points.
Holding the Burros to
downs again after the kick-
off, alternate quarterback
Ronnie Wright engineered
the next talley, with senior
Bruce Land scoring from
the 18. Smith again kicked
the extra point.
End Dean Elliot turned in
the big play that gave Tech
it's third touchdown in the
first quarter. Grabbing a
fumble on Mexico's 16
yard line, the Cards took
only four plays to score,
climaxed by Hebert's
touchdown pass to Jancik
after penalities had set the
Cards back to the 24.
Lamar had possession of
the ball as the quarter
ended, and went on to score
the fourth TD. Hebert
again found his passing up
to the occasion, finding
Jancik o nee more in the
end zone from 29 yards
out.

SPORTS CALL
BY FLOYD HAIR
A CLEARER PICTURE of why Lamar was chosen to
appear in the Tangerine Bowl has emerged in the
last week. The Tangerine Bowl became sanctioned
by the National Inter-Collegiate Athletic Association
last year, and for that reason only schools holding
memberships in the NCAA are eligible. Neither
Sam Houston nor Texas A&I are members of this
association, but Lamar Tech has paid dues to the
NCAA for the last five years.
Glancing over the records of other teams in the
nation chosen for bowl games, the Cardinals have as
good a record or better than a lot of the other
schools . Examples of teams with worse records
would be Baylor 5-5 in the Gotham, Rice 7-3 in the
Bluebonnet, and UCLA 7-3 in the Rose Bowl.
IT IS NOT NECESSARY to comment on the game in
Mexico last week, except to say that the Cardinals
won by a greater measure this year than their 42-6
win last year.
The Cardinals have taken this week off, but will son
their equipment again next week to begin preparations
for the game in Orlando. Coach J. B. Higgins has
hopes t hat Lindley King will be able to play in the
bowl game, and also that Bobby Jancik and Pat Day
will be ready for full-time action.
Students interested in making the trip to Orlando on
December 29 should contact Dr. Hilley's office in
McDonald Gym for tickets to the game.
ALL-CONFER ENCE PERFORMERS have been
Chosen, and three Redbirds placed on the first unit.
They are Bobby Jancik, halfback; Lindley King,
guard; and Armour McManus, end. This reporter
feels that Wendell Hebert was done an injustice when
he was picked as the quarterback for the second unit.
Hebert led the league in total offense, and should
have been the first choice at quarterback.
Joining H ebert on the second unit were tackle Don
Ptacekand guard Malcolm McKay. In addition to the
honors received by these six, tackle Billy Ford
received honorable mention. This is one of the
finest representations that Lamar has had on the
All - Conference team since the school first joined
the conference,
COACH JACK MARTIN’S cagers have gotten off to a
flying start this year by winning their first games.
The Redbird's first two victimes were North Texas
State 70-50 and Arlington State 77-60._
