Shakespearean comedy set for December
PORT ARTHUR—“Taming of the
Shrew,” William Shakespeare’s rollicking
battle of the sexes, will be the second pro-
duction of the Port Arthur Little Theatre
season.
Pam Munoz, as the fiery-tempered Kate,
and Shawn Bruno, as the lusty Petruchio,
will lead an energetic cast through their
comical paces when Shakespeare’s farcial
comedy is presented Dec. 2- 4 and Dec. 9-11
at the PALT Playhouse.
Bruno, as the brawny Petruchio, out to
seek his fortune in the world by marrying
and taming the shrewish Kate, brings a
wealth of experience to his current role in
Shakespeare's romantic caper.
A Port Arthur native, Bruno graduated
from Lamar University where he studied
and participated in theatre productions.
He also attended Eastern New Mexico
University and was an International Ex-
change student, visiting 16 European coun-
tries.
His Lamar credits include the Wizard in
“Once Upon a Mattress,” Henry VIII in “A
Man For All Seasons,” Jerry in “The Zoo
Story” and Hal in “Picnic.”
He won acting awards at the American
College Theatre Festival as Geoffrey in
“Lion in Winter” and as Norman in “On
Golden Pond.”
Pursuing a professional stage and film
career, Bruno has performed as Capt.
Montesenos in “Beyond The Sundown”
outdoor drama at the Alabama Coushatta
Indian Reservation for two seasons;
television commercials and the film
“Palace of the Minotaur” for area televi-
sion stations; and as the press commen-
tator in Paramont Pictures’ film “Student
Bodies.”
Bruno is listed in “Who’s Who Among
College Students,” was a member of the
Blue Key National Honorary Society, and
was a football all-star quarterback at
Thomas Jefferson High School in Port Ar-
thur.
Since graduating from Lamar Universi-
ty, Bruno has been traveling to various
cities to act and pursue a career. He is
back in Port Arthur to look into several
area movie projects.
Playing opposite Bruno is Munoz as
Kate, the fiery tempered shrew determin-
ed not to be married or tamed, creating the
main love story of the farce.
Munoz, a Port Neches resident, is a
theatre graduate of Lamar University and
a graduate assistant at the University of
Houston drama department. She holds a
masters of education and has taught
special education classes for several
years.
Her theatre credits at Lamar University
include Elizabeth in “The Crucible,” Foxy
in “Foxy Lady,” Lola in “Cavalleria
Rusticana,” “Johnny Schicci,” “My Fair
Lady” and “Li’l Abner.”
At the University of Houston, she played
the housekeeper in “Man of la Mancha”
and was cak in Shakespeare’s “King
John.”
While at Lamar, she sang with the Con-
cert Choir, Shades of Cardinal Singers,
Grand Choir and Opera Workshop produc-
tions, and was chosen as best female
technician one season in the theatre
department.
Munoz has recently re-activated her
theatre interests, having been busy with
her family life.
The second love story in Shakespeare’s
comedy is the romance of Kate’s younger
sister, Bianca, who is courted by many
suitors, and won by the new man in town,
Lucentio, after many complications.
The couple will be played by Kate Jef-
frey as Bianca and Dal James as Lucentio.
Jeffrey is a student at Silsbee High
School. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
J.C. Jeffrey Jr. of Silsbee.
Her credits include the lead role of Anne
in “Diary of Anne Frank,” produced by
the Silsbee Little Theatre, as well as the
role of Minnie in “Annie Get Your Gun,”
also with the Silsbee group.
This past summer, Kate Jeffrey par-
ticipated in a Shakespearean workshop at
Texas Christian University in conjunction
with the Fort Worth Shakespeare-in-the-
Park festival. She also has participated in
theatre workshops in Silsbee and at the
University of Michigan Gifted Students In-
stitute.
Jeffrey has placed first in several UIL
speech and drama events in district com-
petition.
James is a senior at Thomas Jefferson
High School in Port Arthur, where he has
performed as Hinsey in “Pajama Game,”
the minstrel in “Once Upon a Mattress,”
winning a best actor award playing the
lead in Shakespeare’s “MacBeth,” and
currently has the lead in the upcoming pro-
duction of “Guys and Dolls.”
James has won numerous awards in
speech and drama competitions and in
music at the regional level. He sings with
the school’s acapella choir and pop singing
group.
Active in the PALT, James has been in
productions of “King And I,” “Sound of
Music,” “Razzle Dazzle,” “Wizard of Oz,”
“Heaven Can Wait” and the Aldersgate
Players’ “Oklahoma.” He recently
directed a children’s theatre play for the
Tiny Tims group.
Also an artist, James has recently held a
one-man art show at the Driftwood Hotel in
Port Arthur, and his work will be on ex-
hibit in the PALT lobby during “Taming of
the Shrew” performances.
Bianca is pursued by many couriers who
want to marry her as soon as her older
sister Kate is married. Bianca’s men are
played by Robert Claypool as Tranio,
Steve Hutton as Gremio and Mike
Arensman as Hortensio, all young men in
the city of Padua pursuing Bianca’s love.
Claypool’s credits include PALT’s
“Brigadoon” as Charlie, “Show Boat” as
Frank, “You’ll Love My Wife” as Curtis,
and as producer of two dinner theatres. He
recently was in “Annie Get Your Gun” at
the Lutcher Theatre in Orange.
A Beaumont resident, Claypool recently
married community actress Kate Garst,
who also appears in “Taming of the
Shrew.”
Hutton, originally from Iowa, is
employed as the assistant principal at
Nederland High School.
His credits include “Brigadoon” at
PALT and “Macbeth,” “You Can’t Take it
With You,” “Fiorello” and “Miracle
Worker” in Iowa. He will also be appear-
ing in the upcoming dinner theatre produc-
tion of “South Pacific” as Commander
Harbison.
Arensman, a Port Arthur resident, has
performed in PALT productions of “Ten
Little Indians,” “Barrel Full of Pennies,”
“Scrooge,” “Fiddler on the Roof” and
“Show Boat”; Beaumont Community,
Players’ “Goldilocks” and worked
technical crews with sets and sound for
many productions. He will be in the up-
coming “South Pacific.”
Two of Shakespeare’s most comical
characters, the servants Grumio and Cur-
tis, will be played by Dave Vaughan and
Kate Garst Claypool.
Kate Claypool, a chemist at Texaco, has
appeared in PALT productions of “Plaza
Suite,” “Show Boat,” “Brigadoon” and as
Aunt Abby in “Arsenic and Old Lace.” She
recently sang in BCP’s “Annie,” and will
appear in the upcoming Beaumont Civic
Opera production.
Vaughan, a Port Arthur resident, is ac-
tive with PALT as a current board
member, co-ordinator for the Tiny Tims
children’s theatre shows, and has perform-
ed in “King And I” and “Heaven Can
Wait.”
Musical to salute Broadway performers
ORANGE—Lutcher Theatre at the
Orange Civic Plaza has scheduled “Broad-
way Tonight: Music From the Musicals
That America Loves.”
Slated for presentation on Saturday, the
live program features Gordon MacRae
and Anna Maria Alberghetti.
The attraction is a salute to Broadway
musicals, its composers and its per-
formers. Music and dialogue offered by
MacRae and Alberghetti span a variety of
styles of musicals, ranging from “The
Sound of Music” to “Jesus Christ
Superstar.”
MacRae and Alberghetti have perform-
ed the show across the country during the
past thrpe years.
Their popularity has resulted from the
fact that their voices contrast, rather than
complement one another.
MacRae’s voice is somewhere between
an opera singer’s and a crooner’s, while
Alberghetti’s voice comes across with a
sharp clarity and dazzling strength.
In addition to performing together, the
show features each singer with the songs
that made them famous.
MacRae presents a medley from
“Oklahoma,” the Soliloquy from
“Carousel,” and such distinctive songs as
“Me and Juliette,” which likens Broadway
audiences to being big black giants.
Alberghetti sings from “West Side
Story,” “Carnival,” and “Fiddler on the
Roof.”
She also features songs from recent
Broadway hits, such as “I Don’t Know
How to Love Him” and “Send in the
□owns.”
Also slated for presentation is Chuck
Mangione on Friday, Dec. 2 and the
Houston Ballet’s “The Nutcracker” on
Tuesday, Dec. 13.
