UNIVERSITY PRESS March 2,1977.3
Bess Gentry Award
nominees named
Editor’s Note:
The following Is a letter written to the
director of ARA Food Services, Inc.,
the current food service for Lamar.
Carbon copies of this letter were sent
to administrative officials and student
leaders, Including the editor of the UP.
Dear Sir:
On behalf of the Interfraternity Coun-
cil of Lamar University, we feel it is
necessary to express our opinion of
your services concerning the Scholar-
ship Banquet held Monday, Feb. 14.
As a whole, we felt the quality of the
food and utensils were both poor and
inadequate. The circumstances
resulting from your services ended in
nothing but complaints from our guests
and those attending the banquet.
Hopefully, with improvement in the
quality of your services, these em-
barrassments will be avoided in the
future.
Cordially yours,
Shaheen L. Farah, President
Interfraternity Council
Buddy Quartararo, Vice President
Interfraternity Council
Dear Editor:
This letter is written in response to
the letter from Bill Roth, questioning
the Student Government Association’s
funding. Before I answer Mr. Roth’s
questions, however, I’d like to ask a few
of my own.
If Mr. Roth has several questions to
ask of the Student Government
Association, then why in the devil
hasn’t he asked the Student Govern-
ment Association?
Mr. Roth, the Student Senate meets
at 3:30 p.m. in Room 101 of the Business
Building. Mr. Roth, have you ever
thought about joining the University
Press staff as the Official Letter Writer
to the Editor in Residence? Students
have a right to know why you
monopolize a valuable space in their
funded newspaper each week while you
bid for a position as the most well-
known student on campus. I watched
your editorials on the B.S.A., the Setzer
Center Council and now, the S.G.A. All
of those articles have been highly inac-
curate.
Mr. Roth, if you are really concerned
about any supposed problems in these
organizations, I suggest that in the
future you take your questions straight
to the horses mouth, unless of course
you are only seeking publicity for your-
self.
The Student Government doesn’t give
any scholarships from the student ser-
vice fee money. It is illegal to take
money from one student and give to
another student in the form of a
scholarship. We do give two awards
worth $50 apiece each year called the
Frank Jolly award (for the most active
student on campus) and the SGA award

for the most involved Student Govern-
ment person. These funds do not come
from students’ fees but from outside
money.
The reason the SGA has a $5000
Travel Budget is because we officially
represent the Student Body in the Texas
Student Association and other national
organizations. We meet with student
leaders from all over the state to for-
mulate plans on a state basis. For in-
stance, TSA (of which Lamar is on the
Board of Directors) has formed a
cohesive line of lobbying com-
munications with our legislators in
Austin. Representing Texas, 350,000-
plus students, we are able to have a
strong voice in Austin. The Setzer Cen-
ter is a programming body and not a
governing body; therefore they don’t
have as great a travel responsibilty as
we do. We attend monthly board
meetings across the state with other
schools like U.T., (Austin), North
Texas State, Texas A&M, Texas Tech,
SFA and a number of other schools. Our
burden of travel, Mr. Roth, is un-
derstandably greater.
There - is no money made from the
Refrigerator Rental Program. It is
strictly service oriented. Due to poor
management over the years, we are
now faced with paying for 25 lost
refrigerators at $46 apiece. That adds
up to approximately $1,150, Mr. Roth,
and since we don't make any money
from the Refrigerator Program, we
have to take that money from an out-
side bank account that used to provide,
for those scholarships that you are sup-
posedly concerned about. I understand
that you were also concerned with the
savings account that student govern-
ment maintains. Since that money will
now be used to pay for stolen
refrigerators, I don’t think that your
question is pertinent. I am just thankful
we had the money to fall back on in this
emergency situation.
Our student government budget ia
$16,592.00 for 1976-77. We run a wide
open organization and are more than
happy to supply Mr. Roth and any other1
interested student with a copy of the
budget and answer about it. As a mat-
ter of fact, we insist upon hearing from
our students when they have gripes or
suggestions. Finally, Mr. Roth, you
would be doing me a personal favor if
you did bring any questions you have to
me instead of the University Press.
Five December graduates have been
nominated for one of Lamar's most
prestigious awards for women.
Nominees include Diane Lynn Howell
Shaver, B.S., speech and hearing;
Mary Elizabeth Lovoi, B.S., speech and
hearing pathology.
Also, Terri Ann Marino, B.B.A.;
Kathryn Irene Morton, B.S., physical
and health education; and Jay Annette
White, B.S., criminal justice.
The award is conferred annually to
recognize an outstanding senior woman
who exemplifies high standards of
character, leadership, contribution and
scholarship.
The Bess Gentry award was
established in 1975 as a tribute to Mrs.
Gentry for the immeasurable con-
tribution she made to the lives of the
women students at Lamar. Women
students have realized greater personal
fulfillment and greater encouragement
as responsible campus and community
citizens and leaders through par-
ticipation in vital arenas of Lamar
University life, according to Reta
Parrish, assistant professor of
mathematics and faculty sponsor to
Alpha Lambda Delta.
The award is sponsored by the five
women’s organizations Mrs. Gentry
helped to establish while she served on
the faculty and administration. Mrs.
Gentry served as Dean of Women from
1944 to 1968 and as head of the depart-
ment of Women’s Health and Physical
Education from 1944 to 1965.
Sponsoring organizations are Alpha
Lambda Delta, Association of Women
Students, Cap and Gown, Panhellenic
Association and Physical Education
Professionals Club.
Nominees are chosen from
nominations submitted by the spon-
soring organizations. Nominees may be
members of these organizations but
membership is not a necessary
qualification. The nominees are voted
on by secret ballot within each
organization.
There are five nominations from
December graduates and five from the
May and August graduates.
From these ten nominations, a selec-
tion committee will choose three
finalists in mid-April. The award
recipient will be announced at the Bess
Gentry Award banquet scheduled for
April 20.
