Symphony to celebrate Lamar’s 75th
The Symphony of Southeast Texas will
“Let the Good Times Roll” as the 1998-’99
season begins on Sept. 24 at 8 p.m.. Sara
Pflueger, symphony executive director said
this “dazzling, wildly energetic evening” will
take the audience back in time as it features
some of the greatest hits of the jazz era.
Music director Diane Wittry will conduct
a performance that welcomes the return of
Allen Vizzutti to the Julie Rogers Theatre
stage to join local artists Jimmy Simmons,
Wayne Dyess and Sharon Montgomery.
Pflueger said the symphony is proud to
make this opening night a part of Lamar-
Beaumont’s 75th anniversary celebration.
Few musicians have the talent to move
freely and skillfully between the worlds of
classical music and jazz. Allen Vizzutti is a
member of that select group, Pflueger said.
He performed with the symphony last sea-
son as a classical soloist and now returns for
a night of swing. Vizzutti has taught, com-
posed and performed at some of the most
highly acclaimed music institutions in the
United States and abroad, as well as record-
ed extensively in both the jazz and classical
idioms.
Young and old alike will be delighted to
discover that Vizzutti played lead trumpet
on the popular “Return of the Jedi” sound-
track, Pflueger said, as well as countless
other movies. According to peers such as
Chick Corea, “... rarely do so many qualities
find themselves in one musician.”
“Allen Vizzutti has truly combined the
best of both worlds with his trumpet,”
Pflueger said.
Vizzutti is joined in this jazz extravaganza
by three home-grown celebrities. In addition
to being dean of fine arts and communica-
tion at Lamar, Jimmy Simmons (clarinet,
saxophone) has previously been a guest per-
former and conductor with the symphony.
Associate music professor, Wayne Dyess
(trombone), has played with distinguished
groups including the U. S. Navy Band in
Washington, D.C., Frank Sinatra, Jr.,
The Temptations; and The Four
Tops. Sharon Montgomery
(vocals) has not only per-
formed in Southeast Texas
shows, but also toured
across the nation and
in Europe, both as
a soloist and in
ensemble.
SST will present the
opening concert of its
46th season on Sept. 24 at 8
p.m. at the Julie Rogers The-
atre, 765 Pearl Steet, in downtown
Beaumont.
Season tickets are still available for
the five concert series and range from $37
to $89. Single tickets for the Sept. 24 concert
are available for $13 to $22.
Student tickets may be available at the
door the night of the concert for $5 with a
valid ID.
