Last season’s leading scorer Danyelle
Grimes is awaiting a doctor’s release to
play, and could be lost for the season,
leaving the other guard position to
Jessica Barnes.
Newcomer Talia Goudy, comes to
Lamar from Independence Community
College, where she averaged 12 points
and 10 rebounds per game, after playing
her freshman season at Big 10 power
Ohio State.
Coach Grey Giovanine tips off his
sixth season at the helm of the Lamar
program with an exhibition game
against the Australian All-Stars at 7:30
p.m.
Giovanine is 63-74 in his previous
five years at Lamar, including last sea-
son’s 15-14 mark. Giovanine welcomes
back eight letterman from last year’s
team that advanced to the semifinals of
the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
The leading returnee for the Cards is
GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American
Matt Sundblad. Sundblad, a senior from
Urbandale, Iowa, averaged 11.3 ppg last
season, and led the nation with a .923
free throw percentage, also a new
Lamar record.
Malcolm McCreight, a transfer from
Jackson State Community College, will
provide Sundblad help in the Lamar
backcourt. McCreight averaged 18.9
points, 11.0 assists, and 3.7 steals per
game last season.
Kenyon Spears will also provide valu-
able backcourt depth. Spears, a sopho-
more from Hardin Jefferson, finished
strongly last season with a career high
12 points against Texas-Pan American
in the first round of the Sun Belt
Conference Tournament.
The Lamar front court welcomes
back 6-8 Marlone Jackson and 6-10
Frank Obudo.
Jackson, a junior from Lufkin, aver-
aged 8.7 ppg, and was Lamar’s leading
rebounder last season with 6.7 boards
per contest. Obudo, a senior from
Nairobi, Kenya, gives Lamar strength in
the paint.
Junior Landon Rowe will also pro-
vide help in the Lamar front court.
Rowe missed most of last season with a
knee injury, but closed the season on a
strong note with 16 points in Lamar’s
upset over conference co-champion
Arkansas State in the quarterfinals of
the SBC Tournament.
Saturday’s games are the first of ten
doubleheaders with the men’s and
women’s teams. Each team has high
hopes of making Lamar’s return to the
Southland Conference a memorable
one.
Lamar harriers end
cross country season

Mike McGovern placed 15th to lead the
Lamar men’s cross country team to an eighth-
place finish at the Southland Conference Cross
Country Championships.
The event was held Monday at Demon Hills
Golf Course on the campus of Northwestern
State University in Natchitoches, La.
' McNeese State won both the men’s and
women’s team titles. The Cowboys placed five
runners in the top 16 to post a team total of 60.
Stephen F. Austin placed second with 83
points, followed by Texas-San Antonio (108),
host Northwestern State (122), and Texas
Arlington (123).
The Cowgirls had the top three finishers in
the women’s race to post a team total of 41
points.
SFA also finished second in the women’s
race with a team total of 61 points, followed by
Texas-Arlington (99), host Northwestern State
(119) and Southeastern Louisiana (121).
Nicholls State failed to finish five runners and
did not post a score.
Nederland’s Shantel Lee paced the Lamar
women’s team with a 25th place finish as the
Lady Cards placed 10th as a team with a total
of 266 points.
McGovern, who has been injured for most
of the season covered the 8,000 meter course in
26:44. Henrik Skoog of UTA won the men’s
race in a time of 25:05.
Henrik Sandsjo placed 25th for the Cards in
a time of 27:10, followed by Gannon White at
27:12 (27th).
Bryce Darby finished in 58th with a time of
28:32, and Joel Winkle came in 60th place with
a time of 28:38.
Also running for Lamar was Ty Smith
(28:45,62nd) and Stefan Strand (29:07, 64th).
Sarah Salmon of McNeese was the individ-
ual winner for the second straight year, finish-
ing the 5,000 meter course in 17:58.
Lee covered the course in 20:57, followed by
fellow Lady Cardinal Petra Eriksson in 46th'
place with a time of 21:11. Yamelis Ortiz
clocked in at 22:02, for 55th place. Janee
Hebert finished in 59th with a 22:22 clocking,
and Christina McCarty rounded out the list of
Lady Cardinal finishers in 63rd with a time of
23:03.
