Antonio Vacliris are
imposing capabilities. He ex-
hibited these capabilities yester-
day morning before Judge Nos-
trand in the couchee - couchee
dance, the occaston being the trial
of Adjie Costello, who performs
that ancient rite at Coney Island
in a manner which the authori-
ties consider wrong. The jury-
men in the case weie so impress-
ed with the novelty of the dance
as exemplified by Detective Vacli-
ris that they promptly discharged
the prisoner, and that, despite
the fact that the detective was
chief witness for the prosecution.
Afterward Judge Nostrand re-
marked that he thought the jury
had decided erroneously.
After au unsuccessful attempt
by Lawyer Shorter, for the de-
fense, to get the case adjourned,
six good men and true were select-
ed for a jury, and took their
places with looks ot anticipation.

which was sworn to by Detective
Vacliris, by Judge Nostrand.
"Now, gentlemen,'' said the
Judge, "this lady is charged with
having given an immoral dance,
known as the danse du ventre, or
dance of the stomach, as it is
called. Have any of you any
prejudice against the prisoner?"
Adjie cast a languishing glance
at the jury, who mopped their
brows and declared fervidly that
they had no prejudice on earth
against the lady. Then Detective
Vacliris took the stand. His de-
position was that on July 7 he
went to the Streets of Cairo at Co-
ney Island and there saw Adjie
doing a dance which he considered
immoral in a den of lions.
'•You charge this woman with
giving an immoral dance, do you?"'
asked Judge Nostrand.
"Yes, sir," said the witness.
"Describe that dance."
"Well, your honor, it would be
hard to describe it. It's 4 queer
sort of a thing."
"But we must have some direct
evidence before the jury," said
Judge Nostrand.
Thereupon the witness did his
best to analyze, dissect and por-
tray in words the contortions he
had seen Adjie perform. From
his description it must have been
very hard upon the animals who
were in the same cage with the
dancer. She didn't look pleased
at his testimony. The description
being finished the judge said:
"Nov,-, what do they call that
dance which you have just de-
scribed f"
"The couchee couchee dance,"
replied the witness.
"Can you do it yourself?"
"Oh, yes; I guess I could do it."
"Do it, then," directed the
judge. "I want the jury to see
it."
Thereupon Detective Vacliris
got down from the stand, took his
place upon the tloor, opened his
coat, displaying a loose shirt,
gathered his coat tails op, that
none of the fine points of the exhi-1
bition should be lost, and after I
humming a few bars of the tune j
began to dance. It would have;
been worth thousands to a kineto i
scope company to have had an in ;
siriiment trained on him. First!
he pranced gracefully forward, j
Then he pranced back. Then he
planted his feet firmly ou the tloor
and began to wrestle and writhe !
al dominally. Up aud down,
foiward and backward, and!
from side to side the muscles 1111- j
der his shirt rippled. A peck of j
urecn apples could not have pro- ;
dueed more ar'.istic contortions. !
Then the up-gathered coat tails !
began to flutter as the performer j
added other wiggles and waggles !
to his repertoire. And all the
time a sweet and alluring smile
l>edecked his countenance. It
was a masterly effort. The juiy-
mcn were enraptured, the judge
was almost moved to tears, and
even the accused Adjie could not
retain her admiration.
"Say, yonse is a corker," she
cried, using the soft tounge of her
native east (side).
This ended Detective Vachris's
efforts in the physical liue. On
cross-examination he said that
Adjie's performance had disgust-
ed a uuraber of women in her au-
diences. Acting Captain Lawson
was called to toe stand, and testi-
fied that a number of complaints
the movements of the danse du
ventre.
"If the jury desires it," said
Lawyer Shorter, "Miss Costtello
will give the dance before them in
the lions' den."
The jury smiled in anticipation,
but Judge Nostrand quickly
quenched the smile by saying:
"The jury can not leave this
court for that purpose."
A moment later, however, the
smile reappered and broadened to
a grin when the judge added.
"I will allow the girl to do as
much here in court as Detective
Vacliris has done."
But this offer was not accepted,
and gloom settled upon the jury,
which uot even the presence of a
pretty girl named Ellwrood on the
stand could dispel. Mit.s Ellwood
said with a coy smile that she
had seen the dance.
"Is there anything wrong about
it?" asked Judge Nostrand.
"Anything wrong?" lepeated
the witness, glancing shyly at the
jury. "Oh, no, I don't think it's
wrong.
"Would it do to perform in the
parlor before ladies and gentle-
men?" asked the judge.
"Well, your honoi, I—I don't
exactly know. I—I don't think—"
"Oh, your honor knows that
Coney Island isn't a parlor," put
in Lawyer Shorter, laughing.
Here the defense rested. The
jurymen were out for just thirty-
seven seconds. They acquitted
Adjie, who gave tnem a smile
apiece as the decision was an
nonnced. Then Lawyers Shorter
and Eldridge asked for a jury
trial in the case of Dora Denton,
charged with doing an immoral
dance in the Algerian theater.
The same jury would do, they
said.
"No," said Judge Nostrand;
"I'll call that case later. I've
seen the dance, as I don't hesitate
to admit, and I consider it im-
moral. You'd better get a jury
of church members from Grave-
send village to try it. I think
this jury has done enough work.
Miss Denton's case was set
down for the 15th. It was said
that the evidence will be about
the same as in the trial of yester-
day.

There Are Few Picture* or Frencoe* In
I he Great Cathedral.
Nothing pi limps is more striking a:
one iiMciuos better acquainted with St
Peter's than the constant variety of tie
tail. The vast building produces at first
sight an impression of harmony, and
there appears to be a remarkable uni-
formity of style in all the objects ou-
st es.
There are 110 oil paintings to speak ot
in the church and but few frescoes. The
great altar pieces are almost exclusively
fine mosaic copies of famous pictures
which are preserved elsewhere. Of thes»
reproductions the best is generally con
si tiered to lie that of Guercino's "St.
Petronilla" at the end of the right aisle
of the tribune. Desbrcsses praises these
mosaic altar pieces extravagantly, and
even expresses the opinion that they are
probably superior in point of color to
the originals, from which they are cop
ied. In execution they are certainly
wonderful, and many a stranger looks
at them and passes on believing them
to be oil paintings.
They possess the quality of being im-
perishable and beyond all influence of
climate or dampness, and they are mas-
terpieces of mechanical workmanship.
But many will think tliem hard and
unsympathetic in outline and decidedly
crude in color. Much wit has been man-
ufactured by tlic critics at the expense
of Gnido lieni's "Michael," for in-
stance, and as many sharp things could
be said about a good many other works
of the same kind in the church. Yet,
on the whole, they do not destroy the
general harmony. Big as they are, when
they are seen from a little distance, they
sink into mere insignificant patches ot
color, all but lost in the drop richness
of the whole.—Marion Crawford in
Century.
