Washington Gossip.
Washington, D. 0., Dec. 10,-Upon
the recommendation of Surgeon-General
Hamilton the secretary of the treasury
grauted a four months leave of abseuce
to Surgeon Walter Wyman, of the ma-
line hospital service, to enable him to
pursue an investigation into the cholera
germ in the laboratory of Professor
Koch, at Berlin. Owing to tlie law for
bidding pay during leave of more than
thirty days, Dr. Wyman goes at his owa
expense.
Sixty million dollars is the amount
asked for by the commissioner of pen-
sions for the next fiscal year. The bill
will be submitted to the House to-mor-
row. It is short aud contains no new
legislation.
Prince Alexis Saigo, of Japan, who has

DeStruve, the Russian minister in Wash-

ing of typhoid fever. The prince, who
was only eleven years of age, was the
son of Cienerai Slago, of Japan, and
nephew of Colonel Oyama, the Japanese
minister of war, now visiting here. The
young prince has been a member of
Baron DeStruve's household ever since
tile latter represented the Russian gov-
ei nieiit at the Japanese com t, at which
time a strong attachment sprang up be-
tween..he piiucu and the mii,.*.t:r,s chil-
dren. He feubseciueiitly accompanied the
minister to Russia aud embraced the
christian religion. At his baptism the
empress stood as his godmother, and the
Grand Duke Alexis as his godfather.
The remains will be taken to Japan.

Paris, Dec. 1*0.—At the examination
to-day in the Morin murder case the
judge waived the point of Madame Hug-
lies viewing the body of Morln. The .
bullet was found imbedded in the brain.
No one claimed the bedy and ic was bur-
it d by the gover»nient. Numerous wit
nesses volunteered evidence that in the
trial of January Madame Le Noriaand
had suborned bad characters to swear
falsely, so that she might obtain a sepa-
ration ftoui her husband. Madame Hug
ties asserts Le Normand paid private de-
tective Vandal twenty-five thousand
francs to suborn witnesses against her.
(Ungues), Vandal denies this state-
ment, A bundle of papers found in
Morin's peckgt shows lie was engaged in
another private inquiry with a view to
levying blackmail.

Another Failure,
Syracuse, N. Y., Dec. lO.-Wilkinson
Bros., personal bankers, closed this
morning. Tlidir nfi'airs are in the hands
of a receiver. The firm rated from $100,-
000 to $500,000. C. E. Hubbell is the as-
signee.
The Wilkinson failure is thought to in-
volve about #400,000. The Wilkinsons
were large holders of real estate which
was heavily encumbered. The deposi-
tors embrace many farmers to small
amounts, who were attracted by offers of
4 per cent, interest. Few business firms
were involved. The assets will be a lit-
tle more than to pay the preferences,
which are $08,000.
The Wilkinson failure shows liabilities
of about half a million, and assets of
$150,000 of real estate, mortgaged for
$125,000, There will be nothing for the
depositors.
