LAJIH VM ItKMOM INATE1),
Yesterday's democratic coin
gresrional cou petition of the Elev-
enth district met at Abilene and
renominated S. W. T. Lanham for
the scat in congress which ho has
bo acceptably and satisfactorily
filled, He was nominated by ac-
clamation. There was practically
no opposition to him, for the peo-
ple of the district have sense
..enough . to hold on to a good
thing when they once have it.
One of the members of the Kl
l'aso delegation kindly volunteer-
ed to keep the Timkh posted about
the proceedings of the conven-
tion, and early in the morning dis-
patched to it us follows:
The convention met at 11 o'clock
in the morning. A close calcula-
tion shows only six votes against.
Lanhara, who will probably be
nominated by acclamation.
The Times had known this, or
rather expected it, all along. It
reflects the sentiments of this
community, and had pointed out
throughout the campaign so far
that we could not select a better
inan for congress than the present
incumbent. Measured by every
jule of political expediency, fair-
jiess and Justice he deserved a re-
nomination and re-election. In a
congress known to be the most
niggardly and parsimonious that
ever silt in the capitol at Wash-
ington, when special appropria-
tions were under consideration,
be hnd championed El Paso's
cause and battled for her claim to
a federal buildiug with such skill
and persistency that the eastern
half of the mammoth district
which he representsactually com-
plained of the alleged partiality
which the congressman was ex-
hibiting toward us.
The Times congratulates itself
and this commuuity that our old
champion Is going back to the
halls of congress- We will have
preat need of his services in the
Fiftieth congress We want his
persistency, his eloquence, his
savoir faire among the depau-
otents, to advocate the »nlargc-
ment of Fort Bliss to a ten-com-
pany post at least, if not the main
military station of the republic in
th€ southwest. We need his help
its enlarging onr custom house fa-
culties and obtaining federal as-
sistauce in cheeking the annual
he will
not be reluctant in doing all he
cau for us.
In this connection it will not be
amiss to give such of our citizens
as are. uot personally acquainted
with our representative, a short
sketch of hiB career. Samuel W.
T. Lanham, a citizen of Weather-
ford, was born in Spartanburg dis-
trict, South Carolina, on the 4th of
July, 1846, and is consequently a
little over 40 years of ago. He en-
tered the third South Carolina reg-
iment, Confederate army, when a
mere boy. After the war in 1866,
he removed to Texas, studied law
and was admitted to practice in
1869. After this bis career was a
prosperous and flattering one. He
acted as district attorney of the
Thirteenth district; was elected
democratic elector in 1880; was
clccted to the Forty eighth and
Forty-ninth congress as a regular
democrat, receiving on both occa-
sions an almost unanimous vote.
The Times, from the extreme
west of the district, extends greet-
ing and congratulations to the eas-
tern limit, to Congressman Lan-
ham. That was a good days' work
at Abilene yesterday,
The sick six!
No more against Lanham!
Dkmsuatkk from k,'J counties,
and 6 of them only against Lan-
ham!
Col. Lanham's triumph was
such a one as the Times predicted"
Wiggins' earthquake predicted
for the 26th instant struck the
Tribune office prematurely yester-
day. Eh!
At 3 p. in. yesterday the Times'
bulletin announced Lanham's
nomination by acclamation. It
didi/t take long to do the. right
thing at Abilene.
To the Hon. Mayor and Alder-
men: If you meet to-night, re-
member there are weeds ill the
public plaza. Those beautitul trees
that have cost us money, are fast
going to wreck, and the people
protest, against further neglect.
Hear our prayer! The Times,
As the coming election ap-
proaches and all candidates are
out asking the suffrage of our
readers, we believe it our duty to
study the merits of eateh man and
select a ticket, the support of
which will be worthy of the dig-
nity we claim of the principles of
honesty and ability which we ad-
vocate, and of the good influence
we may exert. The time has not
oome for political differences in
our county affairs, ami our judg-
ment is better exerted in the
choice of gooil men for office,
when all political boat is averted
and we act in coolness with due
deliberation and easy discretion.
