Shklbyville, 111., Oct. 19.—The suit
of Miss Nannie Selter ys. Mrs. James E.
Frnzer, for slander, asking for 93000
deranges, wus settled without coming to
trial. The case dragged through every
term of the circuit court a couple of
years, and has attracted great attention
on account of the prominence
of the parties la interest. Miss Seiter is
a society belle, and Mrs. Fra/.er, the wife
of the county clerk. Mrs. Fraxer signed
a statement that she slandered Miss Selter
unjustly,and Judgment was given against
her for $500 and costs. It Is understood

ments of the costs which are heavy.
Spain Preparing for War.
Washington, Oct. 19,—There has been
received at the navy department from the
secretary of state a communication for-
warded to the government by a United
States consul at one of the British ship
building ports, announcing that the con
sul had secured information that inimedi
ately upon the breaking out of the diffi
culty between the Spanish and German
governments growing out of the occupa
tion of the Island of Yap by one of Bis
marck's gunboats, emissaries of the Span
ish government visited the shlpbrnilding
centres of Great Britain and contracted
for the immediate construction and arma
ment of five cruisers, for which they
agreed to pay #6,000,000, the vessels to be
built on the most approved modern de,
signs, with the object of obtaining great
speed. Arrangements had been made to
supply to the cruisers the effect ive ma-
chinery built in Great Britain, and that
they be armed with the best long range
light guns. According to the consul these
vessels are all on the stocks and are push-
ed rapidly to completion.

The White Oaks Road.
The Denver Tribune -Republican speaks
of our proposed White Oaks railroad as
follows: "It is reported from El Paso,
Texas, that work will probably goon be-
gin at that place on the El Paso,St. Louis
and Chicago railway. This line is pro-
jected northeasterly from El Paso through
the southeastern part of New Mexico, and
if it were constructed it would open up
country, in many respects valuable,
which has now no railway connections.
Southeastern New Mexico is a mineral
and stock country, and in some parts of
it there has been considerable develop
ment work done. White Oaks is that
part of New Mexico, and so also are the
Sierra Blanco and Jicarilla Mountains,
where mineral was said to have been
found several years ago. The Rio Boni-
to, which flows from the west into the
Pecos, Is probably well named, for it is
said to be one of th« most beautiful
streams in the Rocky Mountains. This
valley ought to be a veritable paradise so
tar as its climate is considered. It prob-
bably needs only a railroad and orderly
society to make it a delightful abode
Farther north and east are the staked
plains which are covered with herds of
cattle, and which would be given an out-
let by the proposed road. It is proble-
matical, however, as to whether the road
will ever be built, notwithstanding the
reports from El Paso."
The Transcontinental Pool.
Chicago* Oct. 20.—At the Boston of-
flce of the Atchison, Topeka A Santa Fe
the oflicers say that the road is not quite
ready to draw out of the Transcontinental
Association yet, and when it does get
ready it will be able to enforce its claims.
Railroad officials here say that reading
this between the lines means that if the
Atchison by its receut contract with the
