THE NEW CHARTER.
The draft of the new city charter made
by the city council ie now ready. In
order that the best possible charter may
be obtained, tive members of the council
have requested a committee of our citi-
zens to present a draft of a new charter.
The idea is to get the best charter possi-
ble, and to use the ideas of various expe-
rienced men in forming it. We append
After the baptism of .Jesus by John in Jor-
don, He was led by the Spirit into the wilder-
ness to be. tempted of the devil and was there
forty days; by the sword of the Spirit the
enemy was overcome and compelled to flee
and angels ministered unto Jesus (vs. 12,
13). Then Jesus returned iu the power of the
Snirit to Galileo (Lu. iv, 14); and wherever
we see Ilim in all His earthly life He is going
about speaking and working in the power of
the Holy Spirit (Acts x, 38). There is no way
for us to live a'Christian life—that is, the
life of Christ in these mortal bodies—but by
being emptied of self and filled with the same
Holy Spirit Jtjsus draws unto Him John,
Andrew, Simon, Philipaud Nathaniel; He at-
tends the marriage at Cana, where He makes
the water into wine; He goes to Capernaum
for a few days and thence to the passover at
Jerusalem, where He cleanses the temple,
works miracles and meets Nicodemus; then
on His way back to Ualilee He meets the wo-
man and people of Samaria, revisits Cana,
and with a word heals the son of the uoblo-
tuanof Capernaum. All this is consecutively
recorded in John i, to iv, 54, and seems to
come in bet ween verses 13 and 14 of this first
chapter of Mark. According to Luke iv, 14-
30, He then visits His own town of Nazareth
whore He had been brought up, and in their
syuagogue reads from the prophet Isaiah con-
cerning Himself, but is rejected by His towns-
man, who in great wrath seek Ilis life. He
then makes Capernaum, on the Sea of Galilee,
His headquarters (if He could be said to have
any on earth); more effectually calls to Him
Simon and Andrew, James and John; and in
today's l<s?on we have the record of a busy
Sabbath day in that city.
21. "And they went into Cafiernaum."
John the Baptist was at this time in prison,
and Jesus was somewhere in the latter part of
Mis first years ministry. The work of John,
though requiring so long a preparation,
years in the wilderness, and seemingly so
short and unsuccessful, is now nearly over;
ho has but to tarry a little in prison, and
pass from there out to his God and Father.
Jesus, the mightier than John, goes forth to
His work with these few fishermen as the be-
ginning of His followers, only to be rejected
and hated as John was. (Matt, xvi'i, 12.) But
the work goes on, the fishers of men are more
busy today than ever before, the number of
Ilis elect "out of all nations is being com-
pleted, the marriage of the Lamb draws nigh,
and He shal 1 see of the travail of H is soul and
be satisfied; then shall we see that neither the
work of John, nor the prophets who were be-
fore him, nor the work of Jesus Christ or the
least of His faithful followers has been in any
sense or iu the least degree in vain; it is ours
to lie filled with the spirit and be faithful i {^h Istiii
unto Him, coveting only His approval, seek- > Moore B F
ing only His glory, "and straightway on the ! Ma^urJoe"1 ^
Sabbath day He entered into the synagogue ] Moore ilarry
and taught." This is the fifth time in this Oug Henry

vu^iOuS, an garnered unto ttUn, for In
tho short space of a few hours the tidings
had gone well abroad that a mighty man
who could cast out devils had come among
them. If every one among us who has heard
of Jesus atvl boon helped by Him would spread
abroad His fame dois it not soem as if our
Sunday Schools aud churches wcnld tie filled
to overflowing?
34. "And lie healed many. * * * And
cast out many devils." Luke says that "He
laid Ilis hands on every one of theiu and
healed them." iLukeiv, 40.) There was health
in Him for t ten all, and it was freely given
as they ueaded, without money and without
price.

Him save Hiin a commandment, what Ho
should say and what Ho should speak." (John
> ii, 49.) His text book was tho law, the
prophets, and the psalms, and He ex-
pounded in all the Scriptures the things
concerning Himself; He came to fulfill
the law and the prophets, for all spake of
Him. (Luke xxiv, 27,44, 45; Matt, v, 17.)
24. "Let us alone." What can we think of
tnose who bear the name of Christ, and yet
do not want to hear of being filled with the
spirit, dead to the world, seeking lost souls, J
sending or going to the dark places of the j
earth with the glad tidings of Jesus; but

27. "With authority eommandeth He even
the unclean spirits, and they do obey Him."
This is, indeed, something new; here is one
who is mightier than the devil and his
angels, and they iunst obey Him when He
speaks; and they are amazed an 1 perplexed
at this apparently humble and unknown
man, or known only as the carpenter of
Nazareth. Here is more than man, for no
man is as strong as the devil, but hero is one
whom the demons must obey, bo Ho must be
more than man. Ho was foretold as one
who would lot the oppressed go free, aud IJ.e
does it; but they know Him not. Notwith-
standing the testimony of the evil spirit as to
who llu was, they I relievo not

If every one whose sins have been forgiven
was truly thankful to God for such a price-
less blessing, does it not seem that they ought
to lie ready to tell others that they, too,
might receive forgiveness, and thus spread
abroad the fame of Jesusf What are you
doing, dear reader, to make Him known to
others? or is it so that He has never dono
anything for you worth mentioning?

now as they walk to Simon's home, who can
tell uhoir foelings in view of these things?
