LOCAL WEEKDAY SIZE UPGRADE
Water limits start Monday
Dan Parker
Reporter
Increased water use restric-
tions will be imposed in Port
Aransas beginning Monday,
July 15, due to drought condi-
tions, said Mark Young, man-
ager of Nueces County Water
Control and Improvement
District (WCID) No. 4.
Water use restrictions that
have been in place for several
months prevent sprinkling on
lawns between the hours of 10
a.m. and 6 p.m. each day.
The restrictions scheduled
to go into effect Monday will
be more severe, allowing sprin-
kling only one day each week,
and never between 10 a.m.
and 6 p.m.

allowed to turn on their sprin-
klers will depend on what part
of town they live in or where
their business property is. The
water district has drawn up a
color-coded map dividing the
town into four sections. People
living in different sections are
allowed to water on different
days.
Young has some advice for
Port Aransans.
“Use water wisely,” he said.
“Don’t let it run down curbs.
Don’t water your grass for
hours and hours just because
it’s your one day to water. Ba-
sically, the reservoirs are below
40 percent.”
The ongoing drought is
largely responsible for the wa-
ter shortage, but growth also is
a factor, Young said.
“South Texas is just growing
and using more water, and our
reservoirs are the same,” he
said. “As demand increases, we
have to either find more water
sources ... or just get more
efficient with water.”
The increased restrictions
follow those imposed on Cor-
pus Christi property owners
by the Corpus Christi Water
Department. By longstanding
written agreement, WCID No.
4’s restrictions must parallel
those imposed by the Corpus
Christi Water Department be-
cause the water district gets its
water from the City of Corpus
Christi.
WCID No. 4 plans to mail
out copies of the map and
schedule to customers through-
out Port Aransas this week,
Young said. (A copy of the map
and schedule are printed inside
this edition of the South Jetty.)

This is the schedule and map that will dictate when Port Aransans may and may not
water their yards, beginning Monday, July 15, according to Nueces County Water Control
and Improvement District No. 4. Folks in Zone 1 may water on Tuesdays; in Zone 2 on
Wednesdays; in Zone 3 on Thursdays; and in Zone 4 on Fridays. Violating the rules could
mean having your water service cut off. Increasingly stringent water use restrictions have
been imposed due to drought conditions that have persisted in the Coastal Bend for months.
sequences, Young said.
“Nueces County WCID No.
4 will disconnect water service
and assess a reconnect fee based
upon the number of offenses,”
according to printed material
that the water district plans
to distribute to customers.
“Repeat violations may result
in termination of water service
until drought conditions are
lifted.”
Here are some more details
on the restrictions that begin
July 15:
• Washing of vehicles and
“any other type of mobile
equipment” is limited to the
designated water use day, ex-
cept at a commercial car wash
facility.
• Washing of boats and flush-
ing of boat motors is permitted
immediately upon exit from a
water body, but other than that
time, no boat washing may
be done except on designated
water use days.
• Adding water to swimming
pools or spa pools is prohibited
except on designated watering
days.
• Using drinking water to
wash buildings, walks or drives
is prohibited except for certain
business and public health
Cafeteria volunteers
needed at UTMSI
The University of Texas
Marine Science Institute is
looking for volunteers to
work in the institute’s cafe-
teria.
Volunteers will assist chef
Robert Bustamante with meal
preparation and keeping the
kitchen clean. They’ll be asked
to work anytime between
7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday
through Friday.
Job requirements include:
• Ability to lift 50 pounds;
• Knowledge of food prepa-
ration and cooking (even
home cooking will do);
• Possession of a food han-
dler’s permit;
• Understanding of basic
food sanitation (will take part
in on-the-job training);
• Keeping the cafeteria
clean;
• Serving food to custom-
ers;
• Having a pleasant per-
sonality.

in the position may contact

• No one will be allowed to
allow water to flow constantly
through a tap, hydrant or valve.
• Defective plumbing re-
sulting in water loss must be
repaired.
• No one is allowed to use
decorative water fountains
that don’t involve recirculating
water.
• Irrigation heads or sprin-
klers are not permitted to spray
directly on paved surfaces such
as driveways, parking lots and
sidewalks in public rights of way.
• Irrigation systems may not
operate at water pressures high-
er than recommended, causing
heads to mist or to operate with
broken heads.
Sprinkler restrictions don’t
affect homes that use well wa-
ter. Water department officials
advise that residents who use
well water put up small signs
that are visible from the street,
to let people know they aren’t
violating water use restrictions.
purposes.
• Filling decorative ponds,
fountains and waterfalls is
prohibited except if necessary
to support aquatic life.
• Water from hydrants may
be used for construction pur-
poses, including dust control,
but only with a special permit
from the water district.
• Special permits for exemp-
tions from these rules may be
obtained by the water district.
The Corpus Christi Wa-
ter Department and other
area water supply agencies like
WCID No. 4 increase water use
restrictions as levels from the
lakes supplying the region with
drinking water fall. Those water
bodies are Lake Corpus Christi
and Choke Canyon Reservoir.
The water district is follow-
ing the Corpus Christi Water
Department’s lead on several
new restrictions that will be
permanent, regardless of lake
levels:
• Lawn sprinklers may not
be used between 10 a.m. and 6
p.m. on any day.
• Restaurants may not serve
water except on request.
• No one may allow water
to run off their property into
gutters or streets.
