Deal breaker
Victoria Stiewig of Port Lavaca
caught her first gafftop while
fishing the Port Aransas ship
channel on July 2. She’s left
handed but was using a right
hand set up when she broke her
reel. The fish was 24 inches and
weighed 5 pounds. She said she
will ‘now designate a fishing rod
and reel for left handed people
only!’
Whoops!
A photo caption in the July 8 South
Jetty of a white marlin released did not
correctly identify the name of the angler
who caught the fish. The angler was Craig
Kitchens of Corpus Christi. He was fish-
ing aboard the Ambush with Capt. Tom
Furlow of Port Aransas and San Antonio
on Friday, June 25.

Waters are still clearing from the
recent storms in the Gulf the last few
weeks. Boats have had a hard time
going out. However, when able, the an-
glers on those boats have had success.
Offshore boats have been bringing
back limits of red snapper, ling, king-
fish, barracuda, amberjack, dorado and
Atlantic sharpnose shark to the docks.
Bay guides have reported catches of
redfish, speckled trout, flounder, drum
and gafftop. Anglers fishing the jetties
have reeled in shark, gafftop and a
spotted eel according to Melissa Mo-
ses at the Horace Caldwell Pier. Pier
fishermen have been catching shark,
mackerel, pompano and whiting.
According to Scott Garrison at Deep
Sea Headquarters, offshore anglers
are catching red snapper, kingfish,
ling, amberjack, shark, sailfish and
dorado. Bay guides have been bring-
ing in redfish, drum, speckled trout
and flounder.
Mary Ann Heimann at Offshore
Adventures reported boats have re-
turned to the dock with big red snapper,
Atlantic sharpnose shark, ling, kingfish
and dorado. One group fishing aboard
the Iced Down caught three sailfish.
Bay anglers have been catching limits
of redfish, flounder, drum and gafftop
whereas speckled trout have been
caught off the dock.
Therisha Moreno at Woody’s Sports
Center said rough waters are making
the fishing a little slow right now but
the offshore trips have been catching
lots of red snapper and a sailfish was
caught on a 10-hour open boat. Bay
guides have returned with redfish and
speckled trout while jetty anglers have
reeled in shark and gafftop.
John McNatt at Fisherman’s Wharf
said boats leaving the docks have done
all right with bringing back red and
vermilion snapper, ling, kingfish,
amberjack and dorado. In the bays,
anglers have been bagging lots of
redfish.
Melisssa Moses at Horace Caldwell
Pier reported lots of bait fish are being
caught off the pier as well as shark,
mackerel, pompano and whiting. Spot-
ted stingrays have been hooked by
fishermen fishing the surf. She said one
jetty angler reported catching a spotted
moray eel this week.
