Governor Smith To Arrive Today For Hospital Dedication
Texas Governor Preston Smith

the new *760,000 Swasher Memorial
Hospital.

30 - bed hospital. Rev. Murray
Travis, pasliu of the Hrst Pres-
byterian Chuich, will g.ve the in-
vocation and Mayor W. V. Swui-
bitm will welcome the group. Nel-
son Borcliardi, chairman of the
hospital 'ward, will preside. Gover-
nor Smith will be introduced by
Eari Bell Cosby, former chairman
of the board.
Governor Smith, is a Texas bus-
inessman from Lubbock who started
at the bott jin of the heap and
worked hard for success. He was
born Match 8, 1*12, on a farm near
Georgetown and attended public-
schools in Williamson and Gaines
counties. He worked h i s way
through high school at Lamesa and
college at Texas Tech.
He has served as a state legis-
lator, state senator and lieutenant
governor as well as governor
While in 1 h e legisla uro, Smith
was author, co - authoi or active
spons ir of bills establishing a per-
manent building fund program for
slate colleges and ms'ailing the
Gilmer - Aiken program to im -
prove the financing of pubbt
schools.
His legislative career began with
the election to the House of Rep-
resentatives in 1944. He was elected
three terms and then stepped out
voluntarily. In 1956 he returned to
Austin for six yeais as state sena-
tor from an 11 - county West Texas
district. In 1962 he entered the
lieutenant governor’s race a-rel won
the Democratic nommalion over
four strong opponents. In Novem-
ber, 1962, he bested his Republi-
can nval by a 319,000 vote mar-
gin.
He polled 81 per cent of the votes
in the H'86 ?.Iay primary, bigges
percentage victory m all 'the state-
wide contested races.
Governor Smith grew up n a
family that numbered 13 children
and is marred to the former lms

children. They are the parents of
