Division (Airmobile) in the Repub-
lic of Vietnam from Sept. 20 I960,
to Nov. 23. 1969
The F.rst Cavalry' Division was
organized ns a Regular Army Di-
vision Sept 13, 1921, at Fort Bliss,
Texa«. and was formed from units
whose histories trace back to the
days of the frontier expansion, when

Mrs America is Mrs. Wayne
V. Scott of Haxtun. Colo. Her hus-

convention.

On Oct. 20, 1944, the Division,
dismounted, made the initial land-
ing on Leyte Island, and subse-
quently moved to Luzon to spear-
head a 100 - mile thrust through
enemy held territory to liberate
Manila, thereby earning the right
to be called “First in Manila”.
On Sept. 8, 1945, the Division,
as an occupation force, marched
into Tokyo to account for its se-
cond remarkable "first”: “First in
Tokyo.”
On July 18, 1950, the Division
made the first amphibious landing
of the Korean Conflict at Pohang-
dong and pushed northward across
the 38th Parallel, capturing Pyong-
yang, capital of North Korea.
On July 1, 1965, this famed unit
became the first Airmobile Divis-
ion.
The First team arrived in the
(enlral Highlands of Vietnam in
September 1965 and within 75 days
had met and defeated the enemy
in the historic Pleiku Campaign.
It was the first division to receive
the I*residential Unit Citation in
