Mother's March
Monday Night
The Mother's March for the* Na-
tional Foundation March of Dimes
will be held Monday night, ac -
cording to M r s. Jack Driskill,
chairman.
Business firms will not be so-
licited this year. If donations wish
to be made* in the business name,
they are to be mailed to R. B
Dawson at the First National Bank
or be collected at a residence
Monday night.
“Birth defects kill and cripple
hundreds of thousands of babies
every year. The March of Dimes
is trying to stop this destruction
and I want to help.’’
Mrs. Driskill made this com-
ment following her announcement
of the 1969 Mothers' March for the
March of Dimes in Swisher Coun-
ty.
"Most people don’t realize the
terrible toll in human lives taken
by birth defects. Only heart dis-
eases cause more deaths, and be-
cause birth defects claim their vic-
tims so early in life, they result
in the loss of many more pro-
ductive years,” Mrs Driskill add-
ed
“Even more tragic,” she said,
"is ihe survival of large numbers
of children suffering from defects
whic h can doom them to lives of
physical or mental disability.”
The campaign leader pointed out
that while the March of Dimes is
expanding research into the causes
of birth defects, many disabling
conditions can be avoided if the
defect is detected and treated ear-
ly.
The March of Dime's supports a
nationwide network of centers and
clinics where early diagnosis and
expert treatment is provided by
teams of trained medical special-
ists.
Another important aspect e>f the
Marc h of Dimes fight against birth
defects, said Mr-- Driskill, is an
educational program aimed at in
forming all prospective mothers of
ihe importance of pre-natal care*.
