Valerie Millsap Crowned Miss Tulia
Five Age Categories Vie Saturday Evening
A blonde haired THS senior was
singled out Saturday evening as Miss
Tulia. Valerie Millsap was crowned by
her predecessor, Nikki Altman. Miss
Millsap is 5'8-l/2" tall and has green
eyes.
As Miss Tulia, Miss Millsap will be
invited to represent Tulia in other area
contests and will participate in the
Swisher County Picnic Parade. She
recently was named first runner-up in
the Miss Lake Mackenzie pageant.
Out-of-town judges named a bru-
nette, Stacy Turner, as runner-up for the
honor.
Chosen by other contestants as Miss
Congeniality was Leah Rolen.
A total of 81 girls appeared on stage
as contestants in the five age divisions of
the Miss Tulia Contest, sponsored by
the Women’s Division of Tulia Cham-
ber of Commerce. The event was con-
ducted in the Tulia High School Audito-
rium.
Mrs. Robert Gayler of Kress gave a
book review for the Tulia Literary Arts
Club when it met Thursday afternoon,
Nov. 3, in the home of Lucille Brasher.
"The Courting of Ermma Howe" by
Margaret Robinson told the story of a
"mail-order bride" marrying a home-
steader. Emma and Arthur had met only
through their letters to each oilier until
she decided to leave her home in War-
wick, Vt. and go west to the Slate of
Washington to marry him.
Their romance got off to a bad start
when he failed to meet Emma at the train
station, stated Mrs. Gayler. At first their
marriage was unhappy and she left him,
only to return. They made up and even-
tually "lived happily ever after."
Mrs. Gayler was introduced by
Mary Burgess introduced each girl.
Contestants in each division appeared
on stage together before the crown-
bearer and first runner-up in that cate-
gory were announced by Mrs. Burgess.
Roses were presented to runners-up.
Each of the 11 Miss Tulia (high
school) Division participants drew a
question and answered it before the
judges and audience.
Jamie Jennings was singled out as
Senior Miss Tulia, w hich is for junior
high girls. Runner-up from the field of
11 was maria Nolan.
Jennifer Ballard, the reigning Senior
Miss Tulia, presented the crown to M iss
Jennings and roses to Miss Nolan.
The "Junior Miss Tulia "crown was
placed on Tara Rolen's head by the out-
going titlist, Jackie Cannon. Runner-up
was Katherine Tucker.
Sixteen w'as Cimaron Janae Russell’s
lucky number Saturday evening. That
was her number as she was named
Norma Blount who said the guest
speaker, a member of Kress Study Club
30 years, was a worker in First Christian
Church of Tulia and the Good Shepherd
Christian Outreach. "She has a large
vocabulary which docs not include the
word ’can’t’," commented Mrs. Blount.
Mrs. Brasher, president, conducted
the business meeting at which time
members donated money to Girlstown.
They were asked to bring money or food
for the Good Shepherd Center at the next
meeting.
Also present were Madeline Scott,
Lucy Milner, Frances Hodges, Orveta
Persons, Lynna Cloer, Lou Rose Cosby,
Virginia Love, Emily Morris, Valoisc
Davenport, Marie Harris and Dorothy
Nell Williams.
Young Miss Tulia. She and runner-up
Charlsea Brooke Ewing were recog-
nized by the outgoing Young Miss Tu-
lia, Mandy Milner.
Laci Jai Rousseau was the first to be
crowned as she was named Little Miss
Tulia, succeeding Amber Ayers. Crys-
tal Devin was the runner-up.
81 CONTESTANTS
Twenty girls vied for LitUc Miss
Tulia (four years to kindergarten) and
the largest field, 22, was in the Young
Miss Tulia category (first to third
grades). Junior Miss Tulia (fourth to
sixth grades) involved 17 contestants.
Eleven young women appeared in both
the Senior Miss Tulia (junior high
school) and Miss Tulia (senior high
school) divisions.
Serving as judges for the ninth annual
Miss Tulia Contest were Johnny Lacy, a
certified public accountant who is vice
president of Brown, Graham & Com-
pany; Sandra Hcymann, marketing
dirctor of Westgatc Mall in Amarillo,
who has served for several years on the
Miss Amarillo committee; Elaine Clark,
a senior at West Texas State University;
Brenda Stoddard of Amarillo; Kim
Damon of Amarillo, who is studying for
a marketing degree at West Texas State
University; and Teresa Gates of Amar-
illo, a senior secretary for Northwest
Texas Hospital.
Sonya Johnson presented music.
Mindy Prater and Stephen Zuniga,
members of the Tulia High School
Drama Club, were in charge of lights
and the curtain, respectively.
Pageant leaders expressed apprecia-
tion to Tulia High School, the THS
Drama Club,! hat Special Occasion and
Tulia Floral for assistance with the stage
decorations and to others who attended
and/or otherwise helped make the Miss
Tulia Contest a success.
Practice was conducted Saturday.
Following is data concerning each of
the winners, provided by the Women’s
Division of Tulia Chamber of Com-
merce and Mary Burgess:
MISS TULIA
The daughter of Kenneth and Gracic
Millsap, Valerie Millsap was contestant
number five in the Miss Tulia division.
She wore a powder blue gown. Miss
Millsap is a member of Tulia High
School Band, National Honor Society,
vice president of Recreation of Future
Homemakers of America, secretary of
the Drama Club and a member of the
Fall Production Cast. She collects trin-
ket boxes, enjoys reading, acting and
playing music. She was sponsored by
Tulia Lions Club, which has chosen her
as its sweetheart.
Stacy Turner, the Miss Tulia runner-
up, is the daughter of Tommy and Deb-
bie Turner. She has brunette hair and
blue eyes. Miss Turner enjoys basket-
ball, cross-stitching, being with friends
and water and snow skiing Her sponsor
was Danny Allman Insurance Associ-
ate.
Miss Congeniality, Leah Rolen, is a
daughter of Monica Rolen. She has
blonde hair and blue/grcen eyes. Miss
Rolen enjoys sports, shopping, talking
on the phone and being around her
friends. She was sponsored by the Kut
Hut.

Tulia Literary Arts Club Hears
Book Reviewed By Mrs. Gayler
SENIOR MISS TULIA
Jamie Jennings, the new Senior Miss
Tulia, is the daughter of Herb and Sue
Jennings. She has auburn hair and
brown eyes. Miss Jennings enjoys 4-H,
basketball, band and school. She likes to
cook and sew. Miss Jennings was spon-
sored by Herb Jennings Custom Har-
vesters.
Runner-up Maria Nolan is the
daughter of Sherman H. Nolan and Ina
Fay Nolan. Contestant number 4 in her
category has brown hair and blue eyes
and was sponsored by her parents. She
likes sports and horseback riding. She
has a growing eraser collection.
JUNIOR MISS TULIA
Tara Rolen, crowned as Junior Miss
Tul 1a, is a daughter of Monica Rolen and
is the sister of Leah Rolen, chosen as
Miss Congeniality in the Miss Tulia
category. She has blonde hair and green
eyes and enjoys dancing, drawing and
playing with friends. The Family Tree
was her sponsor.
Katherine Tucker, daughter of David
and Barbara Tucker, was runner-up in
the middle division. Miss Tucker, who
has blonde hair and green eyes, loves to
swim and to ride her bike. She also likes
bowling, gymnastics and softball. She
was sponsored by Country Friends
Extension Homemakers Club.
YOUNG MISS TULIA
Cimaron Janae Russell, daughter of
Pegi Russell, was crowned as Young
Miss Tulia. "C.J." has dark brown hair
and brown eyes. Sponsored by Tulia
Ford, Inc., she is active in G.A.'s and the
Young Choir at her church. She is a Girl
Scout and loves to play with Barbie dolls
and plays cheerleader.
Runner-up forYoung Miss Tulia was
Charlsea Brooke Ewing, daughter of
Mike Ewing and Mr. and Mrs. Ted
Roberts. She has brown hair and hazel-
blue eyes. She is "tom-boyish" and en-
joys animals and outdoor activities. She
is in G.A.'s and sang with the Senior
Citizens Band for 2-1/2 years. Her spon-
sors were Dora Bonds and the Senior
Citizens Rhythm Racketeers.
LITTLE MISS TULIA
Wearing the title of Little Miss Tulia
for the ensuing year will be Laci Jae
Rousseau, daughter of Paul and Dcra
Rousseau. Sponsored by her parents,
she has blonde hair and brown eyes.
Miss Rousseau loves to tumblcand go to
play school.
Chosen as Little Miss Tulia runner-
up was Crystal Devin, daughter of
Michele and Frank Devin. She has light
brown hair and blue eyes. Miss Devin
enjoys gymnastics, school, coloring and
playing with her younger brother and
sister. Devin and Son Farms was her
sponsor.
