Jennifer Thompson Wears Crown
Of Miss Tulia For Ensuing Year
Three may not have been Jennifer
Thompson’s lucky number before Sat-
urday night, but it should be now. Con-
testant number three in the Miss Tulia
line of beauties, the high school junior
was selected to wear the crown for the
ensuing year.
The reigning Miss Tulia, Jonna Her-
ring, crowned her successor and pre-
sented her with roses.
Katie Daniel was singled out by
judges as first runner-up in this cate-
gory.
Chosen by her peers as Miss Conge-
niality was Shaunda Leigh Gunkey.
Miss Thompson’s selection con-
cluded the 13th annual Miss Tulia Pag-
eant, held in the high school auditorium.
Contestants competed in five age cate-
gories.
The Women's Division of Tulia
Chamber of Commerce sponsors the
evenL Gifts and cash prizes went to
winners.lt was Hollywood night in Tu-
ba. The Tulia High School Auditorium
(THS) stage bore life-size, cardboard
replicas of stars from yesteryear and
other movie paraphernalia graced the
stage.
Miss Thompson, who had been re-
vealed the previous Saturday night as a
Swisher County Gold Star 4-H recipi-
ent, is the 16-year-old daughter of Joe
Bob and Sharon Thompson. She has
dark brown eyes and dark brown hair.
A member of the National Honor
Society, she also participates in basket-
ball, Future Teachers of America and
the Church of Christ Youth Group. Her
4-H activities include cooking, sewing
modeling and public speaking. Her
sponsor was Joe Bob's IGA.
Katie Daniel, 15-year-old daughter of
Kirk and Bonnie Daniel, is a Tulia High
School sophomore. Contestant number
six has blue eyes and strawberry blonde
hair. She is a member of the Lady Hornet
cross country, basketball and track
teams and is involved in Future Teach-
ers of America, band, Business Profes-
sionals of America and is a Student
Council representative.
Miss Daniel enjoys singing in the
youth choir, playing handbells and
trying to roll her R’scorrectly in Spanish
class. Pre-Owned Equipment was her
sponsor.
Miss Gunkey is the 16-year-old
daughter of Phillip and Cathey Gunkey,
She has hazel eyes and brown hair. A
member of Future Homemakers of
America, Business Professionals of
America and the First Baptist Church,
she enjoys cooking, reading and spend-
ing time with friends. She was spon-
sored by her parents.
Students in Tulia High School arc
eligible to compete for Miss Tulia.
Judging was based on personality,
poise and attractiveness.
YOUNG CATEGORIES
Reigning for the next year as Senior
Miss Tulia (junior high) will be Stacy
Renee Lamb, daughter of Bobby and
Thrcsa Lamb. She enjoys playing bas-
ketball, baby silting, showing her lambs
in 4-H and fishing with her dad. She has
brown eyes and light brown hair and was
sponsored by Donald Russell.
First runner-up in this division, which
included 10 contestants, was Brandy
Hayhurst, daughter of Kelly and Linda
Hayhurst. Active in Girl Scouts for
seven years, she has blue eyes and red
hair. Miss Hayhurst enjoys playing bas-
ketball and being in band. Her sponsor
was Wes’ Speciality Service.
Robin Bryson became Junior Miss
Tulia (fourth through sixth grades). This
was the largest category with 23 entries.
A daughter of Dr. Neil and Kathy
Bryson, number 21 has green eyes and
brown hair. She enjoys running, playing
basketball, cheerleading and working
math problems. Robin, spsonsored by
her parents, is active in G A’s and choir at
the First Baptist Church. i
Runner-up in the middle division was
Andreia Mcchillc Vaughn, the daughter
of Gary and Cheryl Vaughn, who has
blue eyes and blonde hair. The first
contestant to appear in this category,
Andreia has been in Girl Scouts for three
years and in G A's for the four years. She
enjoys writing to her pen pals, playing
with friends, practicing chcerlcading,
going to gymnastics class and flying
with her dad. She was sponsored by her
parents.
Alesandra Simmons, the eight of 10
contestants to appear in the Young Miss
Tulia contest, which she won, (grades
one through three), is the daughter of
Bently and Lidia Simmons. She likes to
play dress-up, play with Barbies and
talk on the phone. Alesandra would like
to be a doctor when she is grown. Spon-
sored by Jack Inman, she has brown
eyes and light brown hair.
Runner-up for Young Miss Tulia was
Melissa Adams, daughter of Joe and
Nina Adams. Sponsored by Adams
Ranch, Melissa Ann has hazel eyes and
blonde hair and likes school, bowling,
basketball, horseback riding and play-
ing with her dog "Buster." She hopes to
become a librarian when grown.
Crowned Little Miss Tulia from 13
contestants (four years through kinder-
garten) was Courtney Shanell Ward,
daughter of James and Teresa Ward.
Sponsored by B&R Thriftway, Court-
ney has blue eyes and brown hair and
enjoys music, reading, being with
people, learning, going to school and
animals.
Runner-up among the younger girls
was Laci Michelle Singer, daughter of
Randy and Carolyn Singer and spon-
sored by Singer Real Estate. She attends
Friendly Frog Play School. Laci, who
has brown eyes and light brown hair,
enjoys singing, coloring and playing
with her friends.
FORMER MISS TULIAS
Seven former Miss Tulias were intro-
duced. They include:
•Juliana Howard, who was graduated
from Tulia High School in 1962 and attended
West Texas State University, where she was
voted most beautiful in 1965 and was gradu-
ated with a bachelor's degree in speech and
drama. She was one of the first can-can girls
at Palo Duro amphitheatre. She worked dur-
ing college as a model. She married her high
school sweetheart, Bobby Howard, and they
arc parents of one son, who is a senior at
Texas Tech University. Mrs. Howard, who
recently received a master's degree in Educa-
tion Administration, teaches at Tulia High
School. She says the students keep her feel-
ing young. When she can get away from the
classes, she enjoys reading paperback mys-
teries.
•Angie Stark Martin was Miss Tulia
1981. After graduating from Tulia High
School, she earned a bachelor’s degree in
Agriculture Education from Texas Tech
University in 1987. She married Mtich
Mai tin and they have one daughter, Kassidy.
A Tulia resident. Mrs. Martin is employed at
Brown's Power and Equipment as account-
ing manager. She enjoys working with
young people in 4-H activities and currently
is a member of the Women’s Division of
Tulia Chamber of Commerce.
•Elaine Moore Carson was crowned Miss
Tulia in 1982. She was graduated fromTulia

runners-up were chosen during the annual pageant,
held Saturday evening in the high school audito-

High School in 1983 and studied dental hy-
giene at Amarillo College. She was married
to Bodie Carson in 1987. The Tulia residents
are parents of a son. Mitchell, and their
second child is due in January.
•Miss Tulia 1984 was Angel Edwards
Morren. She graduated Magna Cum Laudc
from Wayland Baptist College with a degree
in management. Chosen as Miss Wayland in
1987, she is employed by the Texas Employ-
ment Commission in Plainvicw and was
married to Coach Wayne Morren in June '91.
She had judged and directed several local
and regional pageants and has coached girls
in interviewing and modeling. She entertains
in area vocal performances.
•Angie Stewart Cox was Miss Tulia 1986.
Graduated from Lubbock Christian Univer-
sity, she is pursing a master’s degree at West
Texas State University. Currently, Mrs. Cox
is teaching fifth grade in Swinbum Elemen-
tary. She is married to Eric Cox and they one
daughter, Erika.
•Valeric Millsap DeVoss began her reign
as Miss Tulia in 1988. She has attended
Texas Tech University. South Plains Col-
lege and West Texas State University and is
working on her BSN in nursing. Mrs. De-
Voss served as Lioas Club sweetheart at the
same time as Miss Tulia. Married to Tim
DeVoss, the couple resides in Amarillo and
she is employed by United Supermarkets in
Amarillo as P.O.S. clerk.
•Miss Tulia 1990 was Jamie Jennings. A
16-year-old daughter of Herb and Sue Jen-
nings, she was also Senior Miss Tulia in
1988. A Tulia High School student, she is
involved in Future Teachers of America,
Business Professionals of America, Student
Council, basketball and church activities.
She enjoys cooking, sewing and operating a
combine in the summer Miss Jennings plans
to attend West Texas A&M as a pre-med
student.
RETIRING TITLEHOLDERS
Retiring tilleholders were:
•Little Miss Tulia, Stephanie Dunn,
daughter of Brenda and Donald Dunn
•Young Miss Tulia. Jennifer Bradley,
daughter of Brad and Christi Bradley
•Junior Miss Tulia, Ashley Ayers,
daughter of Jill Ayers and Keith Avers
•Senior Miss Tulia, Shelley Bryson,
daughter of Dr. Neil and Kathy Bryson
•Miss Tulia, Jonna Herring, daughter of
John and Jeannctt Herring.
They assisted in rccogni/ing their succes-
sors.
Joanna Dunn, president of the sponsoring
organization, extended the welcome anti
made introductions. She introduced judges:
Tish Hamil, Jill Anderson. Paul Belton. Jcr-
rod Hamil. Larona Maxwell and Carol Hen-
derson.
Jay Ambum and Brent Tutor served as
masters of ceremonies.
Musical entertainment was provided by
vocalist Angel Morren and instrumentalists
Shanda Miller anti Jill Miller.
Escorts were Corey Dunn, Isaiah Subcal-
dca. Jordan Barnett, Aaron Scarborough,
Ryan McCaslin and Con’ Sanders.
The Miss Tulia Pageant was
video taped. Videos are available
at The Memory Maker.

I he name of Kayla Ilaulk was
unintentionally omitted by this news-
