UNITED STATESPATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW MORRISON, OF COLEMAN, TEXAS.
GAGE.No. 849,155.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW MORRISON,
a citizen of the United States, residing at
Coleman, in the county of Coleman and State
s of Texas, have invented new and useful Im-
provements in Gages, of which the following
is a specification.
This invention relates to gages or measur-
ing devices for the use of carpenters and
ro other mechanics, the particular object of the
invention being to provide a gage which may
be usefully employed for the purpose of
laying off rafters of various dimensions with-
out .necessity for the calculations that are
15 usually necessary in order to cut rafters
at the desired angle, but which usually in-
volve the use of the steel square, the try-
square, and the bevel.
A further object of the invention is to pro-
20 vide a gage or apparatus of this kind which
may be conveniently clamped upon the
timber that is being operated upon so that
it will be held firmly in position while in use.
A further object of the invention is to pro-
25 vide an apparatus of the character described
having a saw-guide so that the saw will be
guided while the desired cut is being made.
Still further objects of the invention are
to simplify and improve the construction and
30 operation of this class of devices.
With these and other ends in vi-ew the
invention consists in the improved construc-
tion, arrangement, and combination of parts,
which will be hereinafter fully described, and
35 particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been
illustrated a simple and preferred form of the
invention, it being, however, understood that
no limitation is necessarily made to the pre-
40 cise structural details therein exhibited, but
that changes, alterations, and modifications
within the scope of the invention may be
made when desired. -
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view
45 of a gage constructed according to the in-
vention, a portion of the straight-edge having
been broken off. Fig. 2 is a side view of that
portion of the device having the straight-
edge. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on
50 the line 3 3, Fig. 1, showing the saw-guide
in a raised position. Fig. 4 is a sectional
detail view taken on the plane indicated by
the lines 4 4 in Fig. 1.
Corresponding parts in the several figures
55 are denoted by like characters of reference.
The improved gage includes a base 1, hav-. atented April 2, 1907.
ing at one edge a downturned flange 2, which
constitutes a straight-edge and which is pro-
vided with a scale laid off in inches and frac-
tions thereof. The base is provided with 6o
transversely-disposed flanges 3 3, between
which is fitted a slide 4, having ratchet-teeth
or notches 5, adapted to be engaged by the
pawl 6, which is pivoted between the flanges
3 3. The slide 4 is provided upon its under 65
side with a spring-clamp 7, Fig. 4, adapted
to engage one edge of the piece of timber,
the opposite edge of which is engaged by the
flange 2, the latter and the spring-clamp 7
cooperating to secure the base 1 firmly upon 70
the timber, as will be readily seen by refer-
ence to Fig. 4 of the drawings. It will be
understood that the spring-clamp 7 will
readily adapt itself to the timbers of different
thicknesses and that the resiliency of said 75
spring enables the slide 4 to be moved to a
position where one of the notches in said
slide is firmly engaged by the pawl 6. A
cross-piece 8, connecting the flanges 3, serves,
in connection with the pawl 6, to prevent dis- 8o
placement of the slide 4. The base 1 is
provided at one end with an obliquely-ex-
tending neck 9, which is reinforced by ribs
10 upon its upper side, said neck carrying a
segment-plate 11, having on its upper side a 85
segmental rib 12, Fig. 3, provided with a
correspondingly-segmental flange 13, which
has been shown as being hollow or tubular,
but which may be of any desired construc-
tion. Said flange serves to guide a sliding 90
head 14, having a pivoted stop member 15,
which is adapted to engage any one of the
plurality of notches 16 in the flange 13 for
the purpose of securing the head 14 in any
position to which it may be adjusted. 95
Pivotally mounted upon the segment-
plate 11, concentrically with the flanged rib
12, is a lug 17, with which is hingedly con-
nected a gage-plate 18, having lugs 19 upon
its upper side. A yoke 20 is hingedly con- 1oo
nected with the lugs 19, and the side members
of said yoke are connected to form a bar 21,
that extends through an aperture in the head
14. Upon the latter is pivoted a pawl 22,
adapted to engage any one of the plurality 05
of notches in the yoke-bar 21. The gage-
plate 18 when raised to an upright position
may thus be secured at various adjustments.
Connected with the gage-plate is a reversely-
curved arm or bar 24, provided at the edges TIC.
thereof with strengthening-ribs25, said arm
constituting a saw-guide. Upon the gage-Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 1, 1906. Serial No. 328,798.
