to Kickoff Breast Cancer Awareness Month
The Houston Affiliate of Susan G.
Komen for the Cure® will kickoff
National Breast Cancer Awareness
Month by rocking the largest footrace
in the city, the 21st Annual Komen
Houston Race for the Cure®, set for
Saturday, Oct. 1 at Sam Houston Park
in Downtown.
Last year’s event welcomed more
than 35,000 participants, including
2,000 breast cancer survivors and
raised more than $4 million for breast
cancer research, education,
screening and treatment programs.
Beginning and ending in
Downtown’s Sam Houston Park, this
year’s Race is sponsored locally by
Marathon Oil Corporation and hopes
to raise more than $4 million to be
used right here in Southeast Texas.

Race Details:
Entry fees are $35 for adults, $20 for
children, $30 for survivors and $40 for
competitive runners. Registration for
Sleep in for the Cure® is $50 and
includes a Race t-shirt, specialty gift,
Race bib, and a special snooze bib.

The timeline for race-related events
are as follows:
The unofficial kickoff to the Race is
the annual Pasta Party and Auction
where everyone throughout the
Houston area is invited to “carb-up”
and get ready to Rock the Race for
the Cure®. Tuesday, Sept. 27, race
participants will gather at 6 p.m. at the
Westin Memorial City to indulge in a
delicious pasta meal and desserts,
and bid on both silent and live
auctions.
The Komen Houston Race for the
Cure® is a certified USATF 5K course
with running and walking events that
include a 5K Timed Competitive Run;
a 5K Non-Competitive Run; and a 5K
Walk and even a Family Walk / Kids K
(approximately 1/2 mile) sponsored
by ConocoPhillips Company.
Participants who cannot attend the
main Race can choose to Sleep In for
the Cure®, sponsored by Memorial
Hermann Breast Cancer Centers, to
show their support without having to
wake up early.
A celebration honoring survivors,
sponsored by Baker Hughes
Incorporated, will be held after the
Race at the gazebo in Sam Houston
Park for all participants and their
families. In addition, breast cancer
survivors, top fundraisers and Race
sponsors can enjoy an invitation only
post-Race breakfast at the Pink
Ribbon Cafe sponsored by Cafe
Express.
The Kids for the Cure® Corral is a
post-race party sponsored by
National Oilwell Varco for participants
of 10 years and under to enjoy a
special child-friendly area with
bounce houses, face painting, and
other fun family entertainment. The
Teams Program is sponsored by
Randall’s Food Markets and gives
teams an area to congregate and

in 1990 to provide innovative breast
cancer education, screening and
treatment projects for the medically
under-served and uninsured in
Southeast Texas. In the Affiliate’s 21-
year history, it has granted $8 million
for research nationally and more than
$25 million for community grants in
Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend,
Galveston, Harris, Liberty and
Montgomery counties. The Affiliate’s
granting process ensures the
impartial allocation of funds to
