Mayor’s Youth Council-Council Member At-Large Position 2
My name is Francisco Castillo and I currently hold the youth position of At-Large Position 1. In the
Mayor Youth Council’s older brother, the elected City Council, At-Large Position 2 is currently being held
by Sue Lovell, who is a staunch defender of the local arts, businesses, and community within her district
and within the larger city.
While most of the city’s districts are more specific and localized zones of the city’s limits, At-Large
positions encompass the entire city of Houston.
My name, as mentioned above, is Francisco Castillo, and I’m a young ambitious dreamer/ senior in high
school trying to change his world through the little things, like politics. The Mayor’s Youth Council
intrigued me after I heard about it my sophomore year from my politically active grandparents, who were
told by an employee of the Mayor’s office. Since I grew up well
versed in the art of socializing, I saw politics as inherent to my
name, since my grandparents created the Harris County Tejano
Young Democrats. Spending much quality and relaxed time
with my grandfather on Sundays or being driven around by my
grandmother during the week, I was and still am always
connected to local, state, and national politics (but usually in
the least powerful way). While my father doesn’t share his
parent-in-laws’ fondness for government, my lawyer and judge
mother’s career orbits around it, only increasing my
knowledge and appreciation for the mechanics of American
government.
In regards to the Mayor’s Youth Council, I primarily like how
I can take this passion for action and channel it through an
official and leadership-building organization like the MYC.
Through taking leadership positions that are available to me,
as I’ve spent more time on the council, I’ve come to realize how much the Mayor’s Youth Council has
helped me with understanding the mechanics behind the curtains of the theater called city government,
which in turn has given me a more realistic and hands-on approach of understanding the larger scheme
of state and federal government. Although the Mayor’s Youth Council is made primarily up of council and
town hall meetings, this organization has provided much more fun than I expected and has acted as an
outlet allowing me to accidentally network with future leaders in their own respective future fields
Besides politics, I also enjoy photography, gardening (something rather rare for a young man), and
spending time with my family. I inherited my love for plants from my mother and have allowed that
passion to grow to where I no longer care just about my own garden, but rather I am forced to
acknowledge the changing local and global environment. The concern for the environment that grew
from the seed of gardening has led me to become somewhat of a leader, as I’ve created a thriving and
fruitful environmental club at my high school, Strake Jesuit.
As I look toward my future for the next four years, I see a college life full of busy meetings, time
management, and politics in the form of student government. One day I hope to be either a higher
ranking politician, criminal defense lawyer, or entrepreneur of some sort. But for today, I have only my
life to live and my job to give.

Say Hello To “Eclaire” id# A07256743
Eclaire is a 7 year old Catahoula Leopard / Lab Mix who is
a part of our “Golden Paws” program. If you are 65 years
or older, this beautiful girl is just $15.00. Eclaire is an
indoor dog who is housetrained and does best in a home
with children over the age of ten. She is extremely sweet,
affectionate and well mannered. Eclaire understands many
commands such as sit, stay, and she is also leash trained.
The gray on her muzzle tells us she is an experienced lady
who is understanding and easygoing. Our hope is that
claire can live out her golden years in a permanent, loving
home. If you are under 65 years of age, Eclaire is the
normal adoption fee. You can find her at the Houston
SPCA, 7 days a week from Noon to 8pm.
