Min Janie Hawke*, daugh-
ter of Supc and Mrs Sam
Hawke*, was selected Ceosby*
ton High School April Student
of the Month by the CHS
faculty.
“1 thtnk that starting on
tennis court# and beginning
new Industrie* such a* VVhce
Pat are indications that pco
pie he|-c arc waking up andj*
realizing we re not just a hick
town.'' said Mis* Hawke* who
received her high school di-
ploma !a*t Friday night
She a dded. "Crosbyton;
would be an even better town
if we showed deeper concern
for each other and were m«ic
friendly."
Ml** Hawke* e x p r e a s e d
gratitude for recent rains
here, because "Everything de
pends so much on our farmer*.
The farmer's problems affect
the merchants, the school and
the entire community and
these problems also tend to
draw us a!) together with a
common bond."
She said she thinks Crosby-
ton will continue to progress
and believes the White River
Reservoir will help consider-
ably, especially local econo-
my.
She said. "I believe the lake
will bring in a lot of people.
It is going to be a big lake
and it is going to be a clean
and pretty one Being new
will also help attract people."
School Needs
Looking bark on her just
completed school days here.
Janie said. “I believe the stu
dent body needs to be more
unified. There are too many
cliques. Some students are
friends of everyone, while
others are friendly only for
their own personal benefit. I
guess we all tend to have this
failing, but we need to over-
come it.”
Going To Tech
She plans to attend Texas I
Tech and tentatively plans to
major in elementary educa-
tion. hut will make a definite
decision on her major later.
She emphatically stated,
"Texas is great, but I oppose
Connally’s policies this term.
As a member of a family of
educators. I am possibly more
aware of some policies and
admit I may be a little bit
more prejudiced than some."
Against Gambling, Drinks
"We hear and read that
Texas is part of the ‘Bible1
Belt' and I'm very glad and
proud of it. We are progres-
sive enough without things
that degrade us, such as
gambling and mixed drinks.”
On National Policy
On national policy, Miss
Hawkes said she has mixed!
emotions. Asked her opinion
of University of California I
student demonstrations. She*
answered, "1 think everyone!
has the right to voice an o-
pinion. I do believe, though,
we should do all we can to
stop Communism. 1 think this;
applies to stopping Commu-
ism in other countries, too, as
long as the people in those
countries want us to help
them."
Concerning racial riots, she

MISS JANIE HAWKES
stated "Everyone should have
equal opportunity! 1 believe
people should work toward
this goal in their own com
nninities and states, though,
unlike all those who wen! in-
to Alabama Rather than
helping the cause, it hinders
the cause. 1 believe This go-
ing about the demonstrations
in the wrong way makes us
look bad to other nations."
See U. S. A. First
Miss Hawkes goes along
along with President John-
son's request that Americans
vacation in the United States.
She said, "We ought to keep
our money here. I think Gen-
eral De Gaulle wants every-
thing for France, not for the
world, and he will go to any-
body to get what he wants."
The student of the Month,
who was recently named Miss
Crosbyton of 1965, expressed a
belief in the United Nations,
explaining, "Even though the
U. N. doesn't accomplish
muen in the long run, it has
probably kept us from having
World War III by enabling
nations to keep an eye on
other nations."
For Golden Rule
She summed up her phi-
losophy by saying, “In gen-
eral. in our city, state, nation
and world, if everybody
would follow the Golden Rule
literally, I believe that the
world would be a nice, peace-
ful place in which to live.”

Spray new Caparol
after cotton is 6 inches high
to control weeds.
Control most annual broadleaf
weeds and grasses in cotton with
new Caparol* herbicide. Simply
apply as a directed spray to the
base of your cotton when it is six
inches or higher.
You'll get good knockdown of
v\ ’ Is and grasses that are less
than two inches high ... plus some
killing action through the roots of
later-germinating weeds.
The cost of this treatment, when
Caparol is applied in a 10 inch
band, can be as little as 85 cents
Compare this with the
c it would cost you for
hoe hands.
Later on in the season, you can
go in and make a layby application
of new Caparol to control weeds
until the cotton is high enough to
shade them out.
With new Caparol, you'll have
no reason to worry about soil resi-
due carryover to harm next year's
spring-seeded crops.
Ask your supplier for new
Caparol.
