New players, new rules?
By Lynn Brisendine in The Brownfield News
IT HAD TO FIGURE that sooner or later Sheryl
I Swoopes Jackson would catch criticism from some
quarter.
Her super star status makes her a target for the
tabloid sheets and the tabloid shows.
Even in her hometown, she is beset by folks want-
ing her autograph, whether she is trying to eat at a
fast food place or standing in line at the local grocery.
In several metro dailies, a column by Diane Pucin
appeared last week. Her piece centered on Sheryl
Swoopes and her husband Eric Jackson.
One paragraph caught my attention. It
reads..."Which brings us to the Sheryl Swoopes and
Eric Jackson family. Swoopes, one of the highly pro-
moted big names of the WNBA, played her sixth
game Sunday since giving birth to Jordan Eric Jack-
son on June 25. Part of being a highly promoted big
name of a new endeavor is accepting that all your
actions will be scrutinized—and, believe it or not,
Swoopes has received criticism."
The columnist went on to say that some wags
think Sheryl should have remained at home and
cared for her infant. Other critics have gone a step
further and said she should be condemned for having
a baby in the first place. Their logic being that the
new league was depending upon Swoopes to be a
super star and that she failed to carry out her duties
in that regard by having a baby.
The columnist quoted Swoopes as saying, “People
will have opinions...I could only do what was best for
me and my husband.”
The columnist then wrote, “To judge Swoopes’
timing for her first child or when she chose to return
to work is just plain ignorant. It would be better to
watch Swoopes score 11 points in 23 minutes of solid,
smart play and then run to cradle little Jordan as
soon as the final whistle is blown.”
Still others have been zeroing in on Eric saying
several tacky things about his role as a bread winner.
But the Brownfield native was quick to respond,
and I think in an elegant way.
Again quoting the column, “If you think that only
a mother can nurture her child well in the first
months after birth, Jackson thinks you are wrong. If
his wife has become a role model for working moth-
ers, Jackson would like to become a role model for
fathers, especially, he says, African American fa-
thers. ' I’ve always heard that the worst day of the
year for black men is Father’s Day. Jackson said
after his wife’s Comets had beaten the Liberty, 70-55,
to take over first place in the Eastern Conference.
‘That has always embarrassed me,” he said. I
wouldn’t mind if men notice what I’m doing. Maybe
I can change some perceptions about what a father
can be. I would be proud to do that.’
"Jordan’s father, yes. he has heard snide remarks,
' I hear people say I’m only along for the ride, that 1
can’t get a job, that I’m only after whatever Sheryl
can give me.’ he said.' and if that’s what people think,
there’s nothing I can do about that.
But what I’m doing, is what we’ve both decided
is best for us. There will be time for me later. People
say I can’t get a job? This is a job. taking care of
Jordan and Sheryl.”
Diane Pucin is a sports columnist for the Philo
delphia Inquirer.
I had a conversation with Eric and Sheryl Jackson
a little over a year ago while she was filming a com-
mercial in the BHS gym. I found two young people
who seemed to have their heads in the right place.
They were both gracious and neighborly.
It is not hard to have empathy with these two, now-
three. The spotlight of super stardom burns too
brightly at times. But I do think that the Jacksons of
Brownfield are two young people who can take ad-
vantage of the huge opportunities before them.
We can help them by rooting them on in every way
and remembering to allow them some brief moments
of privacy when they do return home.
Tabloid trash aside. I think the Jacksons from
Brownfield are doing just fine. And I wish them only
the best.
