Mr. Strong said that this is not
the case. He said any facts in
existence at the time of the
hearing—whether introduced in
evidence or not—should be ta-
ken into consideration.
Council heard a report from
Earl Lingo, chairman of the Tax
Equalization Board on the cur-
rent tax rolls and adopted an
ordinance approving) same.
Total valuation for 1963 is
$32,853,046, Mr. Lingo said. The
breakdown on that figure is as
follows: $7,040,015, land valua-
tion; $23,216,292, improvements;
and $2,596,739 personal inven-
tory.
Earlier in the evening Finance
Officer J. A. Lee spoke on the
operations of the tax depart-
ment and was complimented by
the council for the efficient man-
ner in which he has handled the
department over the years.
Mayor Robert Watts said Mr.
Lee has maintained a phenomen-
al record for collecting taxes.
Mr. Lee said that at the pre-
sent time 99.2 percent of all
taxes due have been collected.
The council held a public hear-
ing on a paving project on Aca-
cia Street between1 Mulberry
Lane and Avenue A.

ponding secretary; Mrs. Bobby
Williams, treasurer; Mrs. R. G.
Charest, civil defense officer, and
Mrs. Rick. Foxhaven, parliamen-
tarian and city council represen-
tative.
The last meeting, a gourmet
party with each member bring-
ing her own culinary specialty,
was held in the home of Mrs.

This is the project of the Pub-
lic Affairs committee of the
Chamber whose chairman. Tom
Pope, manager of the Bellaire
Office of the Southwestern Sav-
ings & Loan Co. and a Cham-
ber director, will head up the
program.
“Our wish is to keep you in-
formed of our activities in your
behalf,” the committee said.
Topics now under discussion
by the committee are: Taxation,
Government Interference in Bu-
siness and Private Enterprise,
Disarmament, and How to Fur-
ther Interest Chamber Mem-
bers and Non-Members and Get
Them, to Take A More Active
Part in the Affairs of the Com-
munity."
The committee recently wrote
letters to U.S. Sen. J. W. Ful-
bright, chairman of the Senate
foreign, relations committee; Rep.
T. E. Morgan, chairman of the
House foreign affairs committee,
all members of these committees
and all Houston newspapers in-
forming them: of the committee’s
feelings in opposition to disarm-
ament.
Sam Willis, 4730 O’Meara. The
next planned event of the chap-
ter will be the City Council Pic-
nic to be held at the Hawaiian
Village on June 25. Mrs. Herz
announced a back yard hambur-
ger fry will be held for the girls
of the Barnes Cottage at Depel-
ehin Faith Home, the chapter's
service project.
Newcomers Club
The June meeting of the New-
comers’ Club of Greater Hous-
ton will be held on June 5th at
11:30 a.m., at the Willowisp
Country Club, 5230 S. Willow
Drive.
Luncheon reservations are
being taken by Mrs. Mel van
J. Welsh.
Miss Jean Adams will give
the program on charm. After
the program there will be a
bridge and canasta party.
