Council OKs Purchase Of
Mercury, Chevy Police Cars
City Council broke a long ance on the cars has been run-
standing precedent Monday night
and approved purchase of two
police cars — that aren’t Fords.
The council OKed purchase of
a Mercury and a Chevrolet aft-
er a lengthy discussion.
They passed up the low bid —
submitted by Mosehart and Kel-
ler on Studebaker Larks — at
$1831.94 each.
The city fathers approved pur-
chase of a Chevrolet from Rich-
ardson Chevrolet for $1999.06
and a Mercury from Snelling
Motor Co. for $2062.75.
City Manager Gary O. Sum-
mers initially recommended that
the city buy two Mercurys. He
said he felt that the city should
change from the Fords which
have been used exclusively for
ning very high after the first
six months. He said he felt that
future consideration should be
given to trading in the police
cars every six months.
Councilman Robert Watts first
suggested that the city buy two
differents makes, the Studebaker
Lark low bid and the Chevrolet.
“It would give us an oppor-
tunity to check two different
new cars against what we have
now to determine where we can
get the best and most econo-
mical service,” he said.
After Councilman Emory Carl
pointed out that the Studebaker
Larker is considerably lighter in
weight than the other cars re-
presented and might present a
problem in control at high
speeds, council settled on the
some 10 years because mainten- Mercury and the Chevrolet.
