“We have * not irt-
iti obituary rhet-
oric about Parson Brown-
low. Do mortuis nil nisi bon-
utti is a sound maxim in this in-
stance, if ever. Many of our
-contemporaries, however, have
taken a different course. Vet
none of,, them have given any
generally well-informed readers
new light or information about
the deceased, and those who are
not well-informed have learned
nothing from their notices of the
event that they really need to
know.”
And that is j ust what we think.
Parson Browulow had many en-
emies and some friends and will
not soon be forgotten by either.
Vow that he is dead we can say
of him what we never could (lur-
ing his life: Requieseat in pace.

“The tiles of the paper we
have edited in Texas for thirty
years present an unbrokeu cur-
rent advocating ability in the
public counsels and State offi-
ces, and animadverting upon
il;e crude, ill-digested legisla-
tion which has been the curse
of the State. We inveighed
against the evils in the existing
Constitution, and argued and
•plead with the Convention
against these salient errors.
The tiles of the Herald show
this. But rutabagoism was con-
ceited and would listen to noth-
ing. When it came to conceiv-
ing or rejecting the new instru-
ment, we supported its adoption
as a choice of evils, and as a
matter of extreme necessity; the
old Constitution WjjMgJfc
«ctombh^tBartuiy, rSfugi was
aeeeptibje. We are not respon-
sible for any of the evils that
have been fastened upon us nor
do we believe they will contin-
ue long if the press will do its
duty ”
We are willing, to do our
share towards getting rid of the
present evils in tbe new Const!
