“TAKE OUB HAT.”
This Settleflt—A Virtue of Neces-
sity; or How He was Converted
For some days psst, many rumors have
‘■‘This settles it”—“take our
hat”~which is old.
Don’t fail to read the locals on
the Third page of to-day’s paper.
Large trains of emigrants are
rassing through our streets dally.
Go to the Nelson House to huy
secondhand furniture at you* own price.
Gi^tsshopperd are destroying
the young apple aud peaoh trees op Mr.
Sam Cook's place.
Two hundred pounds of nice
geese feothers for sale at tbe Nelson House
cheap.
Geo. Rowley, Esq., has huilt
a new fence around Uis property on Mor-
gan street.
Go to the Nelson House and
by a bedstead good as new forffJQ.OO
We sincerely hope ‘‘the hoys”
and “the girls” may be out In full force to
see the Arnolds.
So, also does the Austin
Statesman bite at the Cresset's coffee
item. Perhaps the News would have the
Statesman take his hut.
The News states that the im-
proved Quadriiplex instrument cost the
Western Union about $800. That is a mis-
take by just about $400.
It is reported that the graud
jury have indicted constable Spence, of
this city, as beiug accessary to the murder
committed ou the night of November 25th.
Wlio was the principal? '
Parties living south of Main
street say the grasshopeers have not as
yet disturbed the gardens. Their depre-
dations seem to be confined to tbe north-
west part of town.
Mr. John R. Carr, of the Lone
Stay lumber yard, disposed of a large lot ot
lumber Wednesday to parties living 1" St.
Joe, MontagueY;ountv. The parties visitr

ter purchasing here.
Bedsteads, mattrasses,feather
pillows, moss pillows, dining chairs, white

been afloat to the effect that the C. B. A Q.
had leased the M. K. & T. for a term of
years—variously estimated at from one to
1,000. It is useless to eay that all these
rumora originated with some designing
and Interested parties, either at Sherman
or Quincy or at both places. The Sherman
Register has made much ado about it.
The News, of this city has touched it rath-
er gingerly, but has at last been thorough-
ly converted to the 8herman faith—which,
by the way, was not difficult to do.
Be it, remembered that the News is- an
old reliable oaper, full of enterplse, always
has the latest news—especially when the
giant Intellect has made a recent pilgrim-
age to Sherman.
In proof of this we refer to a recent dis-
patch—a late (?) dispatch by a private line
in the issue of the 29th. This dispatch
bears date of the 23d—only six days out,
The delay was occasioned probably by the
grasshoppers. It would be difficult tor a
News dispatch to wade through grasshop-
perdom.as the little cusses are particularly
fond of anything green. However, after
a toilsome and dangerous journey of six
days from Quincy, III., this dispatch—this
important dispatch reached the second
story of the News building, and there was
great rejoiciug—the calf, etc., was slain.
We have not space, nor inclination to lay
before our readers this Important dispatch;
nor the editorial comment Ot the News in
the same issue. It was, however, to-the
effect, that the lease had been made on the
23d, sure. The News bit—and the Editor
is glad of it—the bite.
, If our readers will remember in the
Crksskt of the 26th appeared a dispatch
from Quincy, officially contradicting all
and every report to the effect that the C.
B. & Q. had or would lease the M. K. & T.
The Ckksskt of the 27th contained, also, a
full explanation as to where and how
these lumors originated. Of course the
News’ dispatch had not yet arrived. It
was all right however, when it did get in.
Now we won’t ask the News to take our
hat—for it’s a cap—although he’s entitled
to it. It is such a good joke that the News
should have saved it until April 1st. But
the News is as funny as (un)rcliable.

As an indication of the confi-

citizens is a thing of the past.

The Sherman Register, in no-
