Topeka, Jan. 15.—Ex-State Treas-
urer Luppinarrived to-day in charge
of an officer, llis arrest is tor the
embezzlement ot funds of the State
to the amount of $8,300. Mr. Lap-
pin will stand an examination allcg

is an error in account, ami that he
will pay it when satisfied that it is
so. ills attorneys are sanguine that
ho will be released on this charge.
The examination is* set for next
Monday, and he gave bail of $2,000
for bis appoarance.
Washinqtoe, Jan. 15.—Secretary
Chandler has appointed a commis-
sion to examine into the suspended
pension cases and to direct the pay-
ment whenever there is no actual
fraud.

The wrecking schooner ltapidan
has arrived at Galveston to begin
work on the wreck of the steamer
City of Waco. It is thought infor-
mation will be obtained us to the
cause of the marine disaster.
The ship Harvest Queen, of San
Francisco, for Liverpool, is believed
to have been sunk by a collision
with the steamship Adriatic in the
English Channel. Thirty lives
were lost.
About forty-three thonsand dol-
lars have been paid into the John-
son county treasury in taxes this
fall, against fifty-three thousand lor
the corresponding time last tall.
There is a dbnstant stream of
moving wagons passing through
Cassville, Missouri. Most of them
are from Illinois and Indiana, but
some are from Kentucky and Ten-
nessee, with scattering ones from
other stales. Nearly all are going
to Texas, with a few to Arkansas.

C. G. Coon, of Elkhart, Indiana,
has a haws drum which was manu-
factured by Richard Ilickel, Dundee,
Scotland, March 23, 1010, and will
ho 230 ye..rsold next March. Some
former owner shortened tho barrel
of the drum about one-third its
length. The British coat-of-arins is
pa nted ou the outside, but in short-
ening it the unicorn was cut off and
part of the legend, leaving only the.

Saved by Her Corset.
On last Saturday afternoon, as a
young lady who resides with Mrs.
Grubbs, mother of T. F. Grubbs, ot
the Allegheny poor farm, was walk-
ing up Federal street, in front of the
Allegheny City building, she felt
something strike her suddenly on
the left side which pained her quite
soverely for a short time and caused
her to stagger against the fence in
front of the city building. At this
time a boy canto to her and inquir-
ed if she was hurt, and said that he
did not intend to hurt her. She did
not know what it was that hurt her,
hut went to her home and there
found a bullet lodged in one ot the
bones of her corsets directly over
her heart, and also found a small
blue spot on her side under which
the bullet had lodged. She can
thank those corsets tor saving tier

A New York lady has a punch-
bowl that belonged to Mithridates,
the great king of Pontus, who has
been dead these eighteen hundred
years and more.
Two masked men robbed the ex-
press m-ssenger, on the North Mis-
souri railroad last week of about
$12,000, No one can tell when they
got on t oe tram. The man in charge
of tlie car was overpowered and j
put into a large trunk, where he re
jnained until St. Louis was reached.
Mrs. .Margaret Boggs celebrated
her centennial birthday on the 10th,
at her house iu Germantown, Pa.
She has danced with Washington
and other revolutionary officers, and
for eighty years has been a widow.
