The family of tin's party now con-
victed is indeed an unfortunate one.
A few years ago the head of the
family, the father of Grandville
Good, was sentenced to two years in
the penitentiary for an assault With
intent to kill. While serving out his
sentence, he was taken sick and died
in a convict camp at Overton, on the
line of the International and Great

our statements are erroneous. We
| stated that there was a time when
the agents of the compress company
represented Denison’s interests in
eyery comity tributary t6 our city and
its managers saw to it that the local
trade of Denison was not sacrificed
to die through business of the M.,
K. & T. Mr. Rockwell docs not
deny the correctness of thih state-
ment, nor will lie pretend that the
same thing is being done to-day.
He knows it is not done. It may
not be the interest ot the compress
company to work for the cotton trade'
of Denison. But this does not
change the facts, nor the effects upon
the business interests ot the city.
Now as to the “iron clad tariff.”
We care not whether the rate of
charges for weighing, marking and
sampling cotton was fixed by the
publiS weighers, the Board ot Trade
or tin compress company, to whom
it serns the business hasbeenfanned
out. The tact lernains that it costs
20 cents more to handle a bale of
cotton in Denison than it does in
Sherman. We cited this fact as one
answer to the question, What is the
matter with Denison. We do not
plcte id to say who is to blame, but
somebody is. We pointed out this'
evil and left it to the public to apply
the remedy.
A word as to the discrimination
made by tnelvl., K. Sc T. against
Denison. Mr. Rockwell says such
a complaint appears to him silly. It
may to liinV but we can assure him it
is very far from being a “silly” mat-
ter to property holders and business
men in Denison, and Mr. Rockwell
he j admits its truth. If the M., K, Sc T.
in j ships a bale of cotton to New
York from Dallas at the same figure s
it ships a bale from Denison, then
the freight on the Dallas bale over
its own road is lower than that on
the Denison bale. This is injurious to
our local cotton business, and is
another good answer to the question.
What is the matter with Denison.
It is hinted by some that Sherman
buyers are also getting rebates, but
we are not in possession of any di-
1 rect evidence that such is the case.
So far as the fact of Mr. Rock-
vVell’s purchasing Cotton is concerned,
we do not believe Mr. Rockwell
would take anv undue advantage of
6thcr buyer* on account of his offi-
cial position, but he must know that
the fact that lie is an agent ol the
Compress, which is so closely allied
to the lail'road interests, furnishes
grounds for suspicion that he inay
be favored in various ways ovei oth-
er buyers. We alluded to this mat-
ter because we had heard complaints
of this kind.
Since writing the above Mr. Rock-
well lias assured 11s that lie has no
intention of acting in the capacity of
general cotton buyer, and will not
come in competition with regular
buyers.
