The lattest report of the I’ena-
Maxamduel at Brownsville, says after
ithe ifflrsit shot the second of Maxan
.announced that he was satisfied, but
■Pena demanded the second shot. Af-
ter the second shot Maxan’s second
again declared Maxan was satisfied,
but Pena declared if Maxan did not
consent to a third shot he should seek
private satisfaction ; thus Maxan was
driven to death. Pena has not been
arrested, but is hiding from the offi-
cers. The origin of the duel has not
been given to the public.
The above represents the Shortest and
Cfuickesl Route from St. Louis to the
Seaboard, 1 tinning through one of the
most populous and interesting portions
ot the country, with many large and im-
portant cities upon its line. It passes
through Vandalia, Effingham, Terre
Haute, Indianapolis, Richmond, I’iqua
(or Dayton), Urbana, Columbus, New-
ark, Steubenville, Pittsburg, Cresson,
Altoona Harrisburg. Lancaster. Phila-
delphia, Trenton, Newark, N. | . and
Jersey City, on its route to New York.

On Arri ival of Trains from Hie West and

The city of Houston saw fit to pay
public honors to the deceased Pope,
and a Protestant clergyman preached
a sermon the next Sunday in which
lie protested against the action of the
authorities in very pointed terms.
This called out a shower of criticisms
from the Catholics, w hich were hand-
ed to the editor of the Telegram for
publication. The editor refuses to
allow his paper to become a medium
of religious controversy, but he takes phia and New York without change,
a liberal view of the matter. lie
says:
“In the matter of the public attciir j
tions paid to the memory of the Pope I
our Catholic friends not only have
nothing to complain of. blit they have
every reason to he gratified. High)
honors were paid to the departed
spiritual and temporal prince by the 1
people of many cities and nations.
“It was entirely proper f r the an- i
thoritics to take the action they did,
and they arc supported in it by a ma-
jority of the people of the citv.”
Greenback Meeting.
The Independent Grccnbackers
held a meeting Tuesday night at tlie
court house, and discussed to some
extent their cause, but there seemed
to be a great lack of a practical head
to lead their party. There seemed,
loo* to he but little of the Democratic
element in the meeting. There weie
sixty or seventy persons present, and
an outside Democrat would doubtless
have had a better opinion of the gath-
ering liatl a well-known Radical been
less conspicuous* and not insisted
quite so .strongly on nominating can-
didates for city offices. The meeting
adjourned, however, without anv ac-
tion, in this particular. Their regu-
lar nights of meeting is on Tuesday
evening of each week.— Courier.
