proportion Is anticipated by Whee-
ler county gin men for the next
government report, which will be la-
nued ahortly after the first of the
month.
Weather during the paat few daya
has been almost Ideal for picking
despite the early morning chill
which gave the pickers a late start
each day. Increasing numbers of
farmers have been In the fields and
an appreciable itortlon of the coun-
ty's crop ha* been brought In. In-
creased ginning activities Indicate.
The first disagreeable appearing
day of the week, Thursday also set
a low mark for the earlier |>art
of the week, the thermometer regis-
tering 31 degree* at 7 a. m„ accord-
ing to J. U. Johnson, compress of-
ficial. For the first three day* of
the week the mercury varied from
32 degrees to an average high of
around 40. The lowest so far thl*
year, set last week, was 20 degrees.

A social session was enjoyed Mon-
day evening at the Lions hall by
member* of the Shamrock Grove of

business meeting the ladles enjoyed

race staged Tuesday when Talbot
Abcrncthy. manager of the Panhan-
dle Chain Tire store here and re-

fected his arrest at Wellington

worthless checks to the chain tire

The checks are all said to have
been passed here on Mouduy. The
following mornmg Abernethy learn-
ed they were bogus and Immediately
went to the farm near Wellington
to get Williams. The man consented
to go to Wellington with the tire
store manager, driving hi* own car.
On arrival at the Collingsworth
county seat Williams parked at a
filling station and wllh Abernethy
accompanying him went In. Wil-
liams proceeded to the rear shop
on the pretext of 'buxines*.' After
a few moments the Shamrock man
became suspicious and entered the
rear of the building to see hi* cap-
tive sprinting toward the railroad
track*.
Abernethy Immediately gave chase
and cornered Williams In a freight
cur. Both started out of the car.
In which William* had covered him-
self wllh cotton seed, and the cap-
live suddenly leaped through the
door opposite the one Abernethy was
leaving. The chase wo* on again
and ended after another 200-yard
sprint down the trucks.
Williams then consented to go to
the courthouse where he was for-
mally placed under arrest. Welling-
ton officer* Informed the Shamrock
manager of other charges but It Is
considered probable he will be re-
turned here. Sheriff W. K, McLc-
morc Informed the manager he will
bring the prisoner to Sliumrock on
the Issuance of propel warrant*.

Shamrock will have an opportu-
nity In the near future of seeing
and hearing more of Its local latent,
according to plans of Miss Mary
F.sther Cheshler. speech arts Instruc-
tor, and a group of interested per-
sons and patrons A movement Is
being sponsored to refute the often
expressed opinion that (his city of-
fers less encouragement and shows
less appreciation of such talent than
most cities of its size.
The discovery of rare talent In
shamrock and the success of the re-
cent auditorium programs in the
school and the expressed desire of
local groups to eo-operate has re-
sulted in Ihe consideration of plans
to organize a Little Theatre In this
city. The objective i. more com
muntty work In the dramatic field
and those In charge believe It will
render great benefits along social,
recreational, cultural, educational
and religious lines. It was pointed
out that the Little Theatre move-
ment ha* swept the whole country
within the past few year* with a-
mazlng success, particularly In the
small towns where there has been
such a long felt need tor such a dra-
matic program.
Mr*. Fred Oliver of the Liberty
Theatre has offered use of that
theatre In presenting the home ta-
lent production;, and already this
has acted as an Incentive to speech
arts pupils as only the ones making

cah for the past three years and ac-
count* of his deimrture carried in

Tile Shamrock pastor was called
to hi* new charge through the In-
instance of members of the Quanah
congregation who attended the Pam-
pa conference. As he had been here
four years the church regulations
made It mandatory that he move
and Quanah church officials had ex-
pressed a desire to have Rev Foote
sent there.

ly instrumental In the erection of
the beautiful Methodist church

done considerable work In creating
friends for the church among non-

bara Nell, newly arrived daughter

Nell was born at eleven o'clock on
the eleventh day ol llie eleventh
month of the year This was Mon-
day of last week. Just eleven years
after the Armistice was signed and
to top it off the baby weighed eleven
pounds at birth.
Not to be outdone by nature Mr
and Mrs McCormack Immediately
named the baby Barbara Nell only
to find they had given their Intle
daughter a name containing eleven
letters Mr McCormack was for-
merly to business here wllh his bro-
ther. O. O McCormack, radio deal-
er and Jeweler, and the family has
Prisoner in Courtroom
Pound guilty by a Pampa jury of an assault charge
preferred by two Hardeman county girls, H. H. Davie,
former Shamrock deputy constable, was sentenced early
Wednesday to 20 years in the state penitentiary. Davis’
attorneys are expected to file a motion for new trial within
a few days.
The verdict was rendered after the jury had deliberated
but two hours. Two of Davis' daughters. Blanche and Ruby,
stared stoically at the jury as the verdict was read, seem-
ingly unaware of its evil portent for their father. Davis
himself showed no emotion and joked with the Cray county
sheriff as he was being returned to jail.

Pakan. who has cleared more than
3200 through a gardening project
curried out during the past season
Actual proceeds came to 3211.30.
Mu, Hrnclar planted eight varl-
tles of vegetables, canned 238 quarts
of fruits and vegetables, prepared
002 meals and made 13 garments.
Hho also helped raise more than 300
chicken* during the past 10 months.
The work was done while her mother
wiui absent from home due to ser-
ious Illness and while Miss Hrnclar
was keeping house for the family of
nine.
"Club training has meant much
to me, especially during this year
while my mother has been away
from home, leaving me the care of
six children, the eldest 13 years and
the younger twin girls of IS months."
the Pakan girl declares, "I have
dono most of the washing, cooking,
housekeeping, canning, caring for
the poultry and garden and to all
this club work has been an Inval-
uable aid. The association with

Facing three criminal charges,
which county officers say will be
held against him. Jack Jenkins, the
Crying Slim' of Flats fame. Is being
held in the county Jail al Wheeler
following his arrest Sunday night by
Deputy Sheriff T C Johnson.
Jenkins is said by the deputy to
have neld Vernon Henderson, son of
a Lets farmer, up at the point of
a knife and later attempted to
plunge the knife into Henderson's
body He I* also facing a probable
charge of rape as the result of an
alleged shark on a 16-year-old negro
girl earlier to the day. the deputy
stated.
The hold-up Is said by Johnson
to have occured when Henderson
drove by the Flats to pick up cot-
ton pickers who were to town for
the day. 'Slim' and an unidentified
companion accosted Henderson and
look some small change from him.
the officer stated The Jenkins neg-
ro then started to stab the young
farmer and a third negro Interfered,
according to Johnson
Jenkins' arrest wa* effected a
short lime later but the negro said
to have been Involved to the hijack-
ing with him has not yet been ap-
prehended. Officers are at a loss
as no accurate description could be
obtained. Jenknui probably will be
churned wllh assault with intent to
murder, hijacking and rape, officers
Indicated. The last named crime
Is said to have occured Sunday af-
ternoon and It Is expected the father
of the girl will flic a formal charge.

and Denver permission to build from

sent Indications ore that the deci-
sion will not be forthcoming before
January I. This la somewhat Utter
than at first anticipated and the
change to prediction I* due lo the
fact the commission did not issue
a statement prior to November 15.
However, a decision given by Jan-
uary will not deter actual construc-
tion beyond tliat date on which
Shamrock business men anticipate It
will be started It has been believ-
ed here for some time that work
will be started either on the Ft.
Worth and Denver or on the pro-
posed Rock Island line by early
spring, around March I. and the
delay to a decision will not serious-
ly affect this.

The state's leading witnesses. Mil-
dred and Ellen Brock, the two girl*
on whom Davis and Johnson are al-
leged to have made statutory aa-

dred broke down to sob* frequently
as the cross examination proceeded.

Ellen Brock showed the effects
of the gruelling cross examination
most and after breaking down sev-
eral limes on the stand completely

More than 30 Shnmrock business
houses had signed for lighted Christ-
mas trees, which will be placed to
front of their establishment* 15 days
prior to Christmas, as members of
the Thursday literary club started
their final canvass of the business
district Wednesday.
The project met with unexepected
success during the earlier part of
the week through a canvass of the
side street concern*, according to
Mr*. E. R. Tinsley, president, In
all 18 business houses located on

signed for tree*. Previously 20 Main
street concern* had agreed to Join
the project,
While only one block of Main
street I* yet to be canvassed the full
project will not be closed until the
latter part of the week, according
to Mrs. Tinsley, who with Mrs. B.
A. Zclglor, 1* heading the work. The
tree* will then be ordered and the
light sets arranged for by the West
Texas Utilities company, which I*
co-operating with the ladles In the
work.
The final quarterly singing con-
test of the Wheeler County Binging
convention will be held December
IS at Bethel, 10 miles northeast of
Shamrock, It has been announced
by W L. Jolley, of Twitty, president
of the organization.
While Invitations to the contest
arc going out. officials have not as
yet been able to estimate the num-
ber of lieople who probably will at-
tend. The last event at Bhnmrock
drew a largo attendance and the
contest at Twitty, preceding the one
held here drew between 700 and 800
people.
Much will depend on the weather,
the president stated. The contest
will be handled In the same manner
as previous one*. The Judges are
to be selected In the near future.
Plans will U made to accomodate
another record crowd.

lington visitor Saturday.

acting business here this week.
J. B. Ted ford of Hollis. Okla. was
severely cut about the face and the
truck which hr was driving badly
damaged In an accident occurlng
early Monday morning on the high-
way near Twitty.
Tedforda truck crashed Into a
Dodge coupe driven by W. H. Crow-
ley. circulation solicitor employed by
The Texan. Both car* were travel-
ing north on the highway and
Crowley made a left turn Just as
the truck started to pass him.
Following the Impact Trdford'a
truck nearly went Into the ditch
then swerved along the highway for
about 50 yards and overturned In
the middle of the road. Tedford's
nose was cut and bruised and he
suffered a cut In his upper lip. The
coupe was not damaged to any con-
siderable extent.

STAR HAVE MEETING
Members of the Order of the
Eastern Star held their regular
meeting Tuesday evening at the
Lions hall. The meeting was fea-
tured by the report of Mrs. H. E.
Forgy on the Grand Chapter meet-
ing ane attenaea recently at Ban
Antonio. Fourteen membera of the
chapter were present.

ENROLLING NOW
Nearly Doten Have Entered Class
Planned Here by College And
Others Arr Expected
Enrollment of Wheeler county
teachers tor the extension utylt to be
placed here by the West Texas State
Teacher* college will be carried over
for another week due to the Inability
of a number of the rural faculty
membera to appear Tuesday evening
at the high school for the purpose,
It ha* been announced by O. L. Da-
vis, superintendent of schools here.
Nearly a dozen teachers, a ma-
jority from the Shamrock school
system, enrolled Tuesday night.
However, an even larger number ex-
pressed the Intention of entering
the extension classes when the plan
was explained by Mr. Davis last
week during the county Institute at
Wheeler.
An enrollment of 20 or more
teachers to Wheeler or adjoining
counties la needed for a complete
class. Teachers may get full partic-
ulars as to the courses offered from
the Bhamrock superintendent. The
course la also open to any resident
who can pass college entrance ex-
amination*.

TWITTY CHURCH TO
STAGE HOX SUPPER
Resident* of Twitty will hold a
box supper at the Baptist church on
Thanksgiving, November 28. at
7:30 p. m„ It has boon announced
by Dewey Horton, pastor.
The affair will be conducted along
old fashioned lines with the ladle*
bringing the box suppers and the
men bidding for them at auction.
The affair will be open to anyone
In the county and n large atten-
dance Is urged by Rev. Horton.
