Down, down the dork canyons we ride In a
flurry,
The cedars sweep by In their mystical hurry.
Gone into the wind are the languor and worry—
Gone Into the west with the phantom moon.
Ha! there is the lord of the hills and the val-
leys;
It.is, be that leads in the midsummer sallies
High into the steeps where the gray chapar-
ral is;
it’s he that leads to tho long lagoon.
Where the wild mustard splashes the slope
with yellow-
lie has turned at bay. Oh, the powerful fel-
low'!
See the less of his head! hear tlio breath and
the o -How!
How ho tears tho ground with his angrj
hoot's!
Now he breaks a wild path thro’’ the deep,
plumy rushes;
(A loud bird high on a tamarack hushes);
Might on thro’ a glory of crimson he crushes—
On into i he gloom under leafy roofs.
Oh, the ;io> of the wind in our fuce: ! We fol-
low
Tho cattle; we shout down the poppy hung
hollow—
See! out of the cliff we hn\o startled the swal-
low ,
And startled the echoes on rocky foils.
Ho! w hat was it passed/ were they pigeons or
spam.....
That whispered away like a hurtle of arrows?
The rose odor thickens, the deep gorge nar-
rows.
Now the herd swings down thro' the scented
deli--.
Speed! epoch! leave the brooks to their pebbles
and prattle;
Sweep on with the thunder and surge of the
cattle—
The hurry, tho shout in; . tho wild joy of battle,
The hills, and the \vnvl, and the open light.
Now on into camp by the sycamores yonder.
Now o’er t he guitar let the light lingers wan-
dor;
Let thoughts in tho high heart grow pensive
und fonder;
T hen stars—and tho dreams of a summer
night.

The Art of Being Entertained.
Let everything dark melt away before
u sunny nature. If you go to a home for
a social visit, be merry, be easy of man-
ner, ready to join in what has been pre-
pared for you. Learn the great art of
adapting yourself to your surroundings.
Don’t forever expect your friends to ac-
company you or show you around. Go
off by yourself, even though you have no
special errand. Show your hostess that
you do not expect her or her family to
continually wait upon you. Enter into
the family circle. Be one of them in
spirit, so that, after a hearty handshake
at the station, it may be said of you:
“What a pleasure she has been! How
easy to entertain!”—Ladies’ Home Jour-
nal.
