_ FOOTBALL TODAY
Duncanville in spotlight for 2001 grid season
By TED ALLEN
Today Sports
No. 1 in the Metroplex, No. 1 in
District 7-5A and No. 1 in the hearts of
their fans.
That’s a heavy burden the Duncanville
Panthers will be toting as they open their
2001 football campaign.
Maybe No. 2 isn’t having any of that.
Or that powerhouse from South Texas.
They’ll have a lot to say about whether the
Panthers can live up to their pre-season
billing.
No. 2 in the Metroplex is Plano East,
the “other Panthers” who will be at
Duncanville Friday night for the season
opener.
It doesn’t get any easier next week
when the Panthers travel to Houston’s
Astrodome to take on The Woodlands,
which is ranked No. 7, a notch above
Duncanville in the Associated Press pre-
season statewide poll.
Duncanville took a heavy toll in gradu-
ation after reaching last year’s state quar-
terfinals before falling to eventual state
champion Midland Lee.
But Coach Bob Alpert has expressed a
lot of confidence that this year’s Panther
squad could be another strong challenger
for the state title.
That confidence rides on better team
speed, the running of senior tailback
Daniel McLemore and the rifle arm of
senior quarterback Eric Hacker.
Alpert says Hacker’s passing ability
gives the Panthers an additional offensive
weapon that his previous Panther teams
have lacked.
Still, it doesn’t mean that he’ll abandon
the bread-and-butter ground game that has
been the heart of the Duncanville offense
that has carved out a 53-10 record in the
five seasons under Alpert.
And the Panthers aren’t hurting in that
department either. McLemore chalked up
more than 1,700 yards and 21 touchdowns
a year ago, and he has added a bit of speed
and weight to become even more of a
threat this season.
McLemore won’t have to carry the
entire rushing load. The emergence of
Michael McCullough as his backup is
expected to give him some rest without a
fall-off in the rushing game.
