WIP FIRE DEPT. DEWS
By Bill.
At the Gulf Coast Meeting held
in Richmond this past week West
University Place was second in the
pumber races. A high light of the
meet was Cecil Ewmona, Squeaky
Quirk and Tony the clown who en-
tertained the entire meet dressed in
down suits, and also ran the races
as clowns w'u understand Chief Met-
calf will dress all members of the
team as downs in the future (They
run faster that way) Both Cecil
und Sueaky are funny enough with-
out the clown suits and makeup you
can use your imagination as to how
funny they really were as clowns.

HEAVY RAINS FLOOD
ENTIRE SOUTHWEST
AREA
Recent heavy rains have again
brought attention to the druinuge
question. According to reports from
the weather bureau and estimates ot
engineers approximately four to at*
inches of rain fell in this area dur-
ing the twenty-four hour peiiod end
ing Tuesday morning. Most sections
of West University Plate were in-
undated and considerable difficulty
wan experienced by citizens going to
tvurk and taking the children 1°
school.
Mayor F. M. Mainoua is now in
Washington, having been there for
the past ten days eonfering with the
P.W.A, authorities, Congressman
Albert Thomas and Senator Tom
Connally, with reference to the West
University Place application for a
grant to aid in construction of the
Storm Sewer System. The Mayor i*
accompanied by Mr. M. T. Garrett,
Engineer for the City on the Project.
Nothing is being left undone in pro-
moting this project and urging the
authorities to approve it. Much in-
formation, maps, and photographs
showing the flood conditions have
been placed before the authorities
in Washington with a view of im-
pressing them with the extreme
necessity for drainage facilities foe
the City.
The ditches which, were dug by the
county force under County Com-
missioner R. E. Turrentine on Rich-
mond Road were of a grant benefit
to -.he Tily iu moving the floH
water. While it flrat appeared that
these ditches were not functioning
to the extent which had been exptet-
od, immediately after the peak f ood
waters had flowed away, the ditches
then carried away a great amount
of water and the result was that
the area iu the neighborhood of
Coleridge and Tennyson Streets, and
ulong Academy was completely
drained by Wednesday morning of
twenty-four hours after the ruin had
ceased, whereas formerly it took
from two to three days for tho
water to run off the streets and
lots in this locality. It cannot he
expected, of course, that these
ditches on Richmond Road will per-
form miracles and carry off the
water as fast as It falls, hut they
were of a great benefit during this
rain, and will continue to be of great
help in the future.
