SOUTHWESTERN
PARADE
By Jay W. Chandler
Sign* of fall are beginning to ap-
pear everywhere and with thise signs
comes the thought of football. And
as this seasons crop of aspirants
blossom forth the experts are P**"
dieting a banner year.
The Lamar juggernaut will start
their season off Saturday night
against the powerful South Teras
representative, Kingsville.
The St. Thomas Toms will start
the following day, Sunday afternoon,
against the powerful South Texas
Joseph’s of Victoria.
BORNEMAN TO STAR—
As Kay Borneman goes so will 8°
the Lamar Redskins. At least that*
the picture painted so far during
this years practice. Coaches Ed
Duggan and Hal Mickalson are
counting heavily on this 6 ft. 197
pound triple-threat to keep the Red-
skm charges constantly on the war*
path. If Borneman comes through
as expected he will be rated tl»e
best back in ihe city and Lamar will
be battling it out for the Champion-
ship of District 18-AA and will cer-
tainly finish no lower than second.
FORNEY BREAKS LEG—
J. P. Forney, a center las* year,
but switched to fullback this season
bjTbc ms leg ih a scrimmage !«»*
week. Forney’s leg was broken when
he wa« tackled by a teammate. He
will be lost for the season.
LOVE AND FRADY—
will be inj there fighting for back
field starting berth.
Both Low and Frady an* gradu
ates of Pershing Junior High.
TOMS KEYED—
Coach Father Allnoch’s St. Thomu?
Toms are keyed and waiting for tin
starting whistle to blow Sunday attei
noon when they play host to St
Joseph's of Victoria.
Father Allnoch has had to rebuild
his Tom eleven for this years com-
petition in the Texas Catholic Inter*
scrolastic League.
Many new recruites have answered
the call to the Tom colors since
school has started and you can ex-
pect the grid candidates to be <
their toes every minute of the way.
Although the Toms will have an
inexperienced team they will otUr
their opponents plenty of competi-
tion. They w’ill make up in enthus-
iasm, spirit, hustle and a teamwork
what they lack in experience. And
fro mthat you can bet the Toms will
be in there every game fighting it
out, giving all they have.
RAFERTY ON SQUAD—
Hugh Rafferty, 145 pound, West
University boy of 0411 Vanderbilt
is out for the St. Thomas team.
Rafferty, a halfback, is reported
to be hustling hard for a starting
birth. Ant! if willingness and de-
termination mean anything you van
count on seeing Rafferty in the line-
up quite often.
GAME SITE—
Since the Shaughnessy playoft
abruptly ended the Houston Bufls
Dixie Series aspirations, all Public
Schools will play their games at
Buff Stadium. St. Thomas will play

Believe me, there's PLENTY you
can do. Just ask any of the Chair-

Then when we do volunteer, let’s do
so iu earnest. When those boys in
