Super Sunday phone-a-thon set for Jan. 24
The 2010 Super Sunday and
Super Week phone-a-thon will be
held on Sunday, Jan. 24, and Monday
and Tuesday, Jan. 25 and 26, at the
Jewish Community Center, 5601 S.
Braeswood. According to the Jewish
Federation of Greater Houston,
the community-wide phone-a-thon
will kickoff the 2010 United Jewish
Campaign with volunteers making
calls for pledges.
This annual event brings together
everyone from teens to young
adults, parents and grandparents,
who reach out to their fellow
community members in support of
Jewish organizations from Houston
to Jerusalem. Campaign dollars
assist people here at home and
in 60 countries around the world
by feeding the hungry, educating
the young, helping families through
tough financial times and so much
more.
“There is a great need from
member agencies across the
board, and this is the time for us
to come together to reinvest in our
community and recharge our sense
of tzedakah. It’s time to volunteer.
It’s time to give, whether it’s $18,
$180 or $1,800 - every gift will
The Jewish Federation of
Greater Houston’s Bureau of Jewish
Education is implementing a new
educational service, Project NOW, for
all Jewish early childhood programs

This project is funded by the Jewish
Family Service Alexander Institute
and the Houston Jewish Community
Foundation.
Project NOW will provide a
psychologist to work together with
teachers to provide support in the
area of classroom management
and current teaching techniques.
The psychologist will observe
classes, document observations
and strategize with the teachers
to help their classrooms be more
successful.

make a difference,” said Super
Sunday co-chair David C. Morris,
who is sharing the honor with his
wife, Susan Farb Morris, for the
second consecutive year.
New this year, Super Sunday will
have a Young Adult Division Host
Committee, composed of Debra
Kass Dluhy, Daniel Fein, Fannet
Kavalerchik, Tamara Marks-Moses,
Rob Nutinsky and Julie Rubenstein.
The committee will help recruit
young adult volunteers and provide
feeadback on the best methods to
reach out to young adults.
“We think it’s important to
include the next generation and get
them involved with the Federation,”
Farb Morris said. “These young
professionals are talented, bring
renewed energy and are the
people we will rely on to carry our
community forward.”
Dluhy, who also is the 2010
YAD chair, said she believes it’s
important for YAD members to
volunteer for Super Sunday because,
“This is a wonderful way for our
young adults to learn more about
the Federation and do something
to give back to the community that
has always provided so much for
Shlenker School, Torah Day School
and United Orthodox Synagogues
Goldberg Montessori School.
“The goal is to assist the teachers
in expanding their knowledge
and expertise in the area of early
childhood development. Giving
support to our educators and
principals will certainly empower
them to help strengthen our school
environment,” said Diane Brezner,
BJE special education consultant.
Project NOW is a response to
requests from early childhood
administrators to receive
educational support that is directly
applicable to our teachers and their
classrooms.
Each school will receive 13 hours
of assistance, including observation
and consultation visits from the
educational psychologist during the
spring semester. The educational
psychologist also will present
workshops to the staff of the 10 early
childhood schools to give teachers
information on choosing appropriate
strategies for their classes.

Brezner at 713-729-7000, ext. 334, or

us. The Campaign supports the
organizations we grew up with,
from the JCC to Hillel, and we want
to make sure those same programs
and services are available for our
children someday.”
“While most young adults are
not able to contribute a lot of
money to the Campaign, we can
give of our time and energy and I
believe it’s important for us to do
so,” Nutinsky said. “It is our goal
to make sure all young adults are
aware of Super Sunday and that we
sign up as many new volunteers as
possible.”
Raising money isn’t the only
goal. “It’s also about reinvigorating
the community by connecting Jews
to each other with the Federation’s
farthest-reaching Campaign
fundraiser and reassuring the
people and organizations we
support that we’re here for them,”
Morris said. “Our agencies have
been facing difficult times lately,
and it’s up to each and every one of
us to make a difference by giving of
our time and our resources.”
At last year’s Super Sunday,
members of the community pledged
more than $360,000 for the 2009
United Jewish Campaign, and “we
hope to surpass that this year with
renewed energy and additional
volunteers, our greatest resource.
Your help is welcome and needed
to make this event a success,” Farb
Morris said.
David C. Morris and Susan Farb Morris
Volunteers are needed from
9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Sunday,
Jan. 24, and from 6 to 9 p.m. on

26. Even for those who do not
want to make phone solicitations,
opportunities are available to help
with administrative work, food
and snacks, and keeping everyone
energized. Participants can select
the shift of their choice and will
receive a brief training before that
shift. The deadline to RSVP to
volunteer is Wednesday, Jan. 13,
2010.
To help defray the costs of this
community-wide event, corporate
partners, in-kind prize donors and
