many ways not even recognized.”
The Chabad Center opened its
doors in 1977, on Fondren at Portal,
on what was then the outskirts of
Houston. Today, its expansion and
renovation are a key part of the
revitalization of the center’s urban
Fondren/Soutlrwest neighborhood.
The building renovations, which
began in February 2007, are expected
to be completed by the end of 2008.
Upon completion, the new Chabad
Center wall have doubled its previous
size to 30,000 square feet, and will
have gone from a 1-acre campus, to a
3-acre campus. Torah Day School will
gain new7 classroom space, including
a new7 preschool wing, new7 computer
and science labs, an expanded library,
new assembly hall and new rooftop
playground. The center also will house
three mikvaot (ritual baths): one for
women, one for men and Texas’ first
dishes-specific mikvah. The center’s
synagogue space, social hall, adult
education and kitchen facilities all will
have been remodeled and expanded,
and more parking will be available.

is especially important for Jewish
patients in smaller communities, who
are at hospitals that aren’t regularly
visited by rabbis,” he explained.
Programs currently shown on FCM
include “Shabbat Shalom,” produced
by M.D. Anderson with University of
Houston’s Channel 8; Shabbat services
from congregations Beth El, Beth
Israel and Beth Yeshurun (including
Beth Yeshurun’s “Friday Night Alive”);
“Meditation Healing,” with Houston
Rabbi Deborah Schloss; “The Crown
of Torah,” produced by Beth Israel’s
Cantor Robert Gerber; and “Israel@60
Celebration,” with Congregation
Emanu El Cantor Vadim Tunitsky and
Cantor Meir Finkelstein of Toronto’s
Congregation Beth Tzedec.
Through its partnership with
Hadassah, FCM soon will be airing
programs on women’s health and the
medical breakthroughs pioneered
by Hadassah hospital in Israel.
With its new base of operations in
the Channel 51 KNWS building on
Westpark Drive, FCM hopes to utilize
its studio space to generate addi-
tional, original Jewish programming.
FCM also is in contact with SatLink
Communications, the leading satel-
lite communications Teleport opera-
tor in Israel, and is working on a
possible programming exchange.
The Altmans founded FCM after
Pearl suffered a heart attack four
years ago. Physically unable to
attend High Holy Day services, the
couple recognized the need for video-
recorded services.
“We’re about 40 years behind all the
other religions,” Sig observed. “When
Pearl was in the hospital, we found reli-
gious services and programs on the TV
for all of the other major religions. But
nothing Jewish. . . . Even if there are
only five Jewish patients at a hospital a
month, there needs to be something for
them, too. They don’t have to watch it,
but at least it’s available. It’s important
that we’re represented,” he stated.
By creating FCM, the Altmans hope,
through the power of Jewish prayer
and song, to aid in patients’ recoveries.
They also hope that FCM will help its
viewers establish a stronger connec-
tion to their Judaism.
“We’re very excited to be partnering
with the Friends of Cantorial Music
and Chai Broadcasting System,” said
Elise Passy, director of the Hadassah-
Houston Chapter. “Hadassah’s mis-
sion is twofold: We’re in the business
of making sure Jews are educated and
feel connected to Judaism, and that
Jews are able to get the healthcare
they need. So, this is a natural part-
nership between Hadassah and Chai
Broadcasting, and this will help us
achieve our mission. It’s a wonderful
and needed service they are providing
the community,” Passy said.
In turn, the Altmans noted that
they are grateful for Hadassah’s part-
nership, and credit two “Righteous
Gentiles,” Todd Roberts, who has pro-
vided FCM with a satellite transponder
and equipment, and Doug Johnson,
who has provided FCM with studio
space and equipment at Channel 51,
as being instrumental in making FCM
available for the Jewish community.
