story is told in the acclaimed book, “Autobiography of a

One family’s involvement helps move
the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo
By JEANNE F. SAMUELS
Through the efforts and
dedication of thousands of
volunteers, the Houston Livestock
Show and Rodeo is a signature
event in Houston as the calendar
moves along toward spring. Many
members of the Jewish community
are among those whose efforts
make everything fall in place.
Contributing to the Show’s
undeniable success are three
generations of one family: Maury
and Sheryl Sklar, their daughters
Rebecca Gold and Ariel Sklar and
Sheryl’s mother, Norma Whitman.
For more than 13 years, Maury
Sklar has been part of the Steer
Auction Committee. Its members,
raise funds and run the auction
in which youngsters show off and
sell the animals they have raised.
Sklar is a member of the Quarter
Horse Committee, as well.
Maury and Sheryl’s younger
daughter, Ariel, became involved
in the Junior Rodeo Committee
