Federation offers scholarships to attend TribeFest 2014
The second ever TribeFest will take
place in New Orleans from Sunday to
Tuesday March 16-18, and the Jewish
Federation of Greater Houston hopes
to send a large Houston young adult
contingent to participate in the Jewish-
identity and leadership in building-
conference. Levi Strauss is the
Federation’s TribeFest 2014 recruitment
chair.
The first TribeFest in Las Vegas
in 2012 drew 1,100 young adults and
featured speakers such as “Saturday
Night Live” comedian Rachel Dratch.
Several Houstonians attended,
including Neil Kogut, Eric Barvin,
Mark Edelman and Rebecca Weiner.
The event includes parties, speakers,
concerts and a leadership- development
day.
“TribeFest was a great opportunity
to meet other like-minded Jewish
young adults from all over the country.
I made many lasting relationships
and had a wonderful time celebrating
being Jewish,” Barvin said. “We learned
about different Jewish organizations
around the country as well as better
ways to reach out to the other Jewish
young adults in our own community.
I think I definitely came away a more
knowledgeable leader.”
The Federation is providing 20 $500
subsidies on a first-come, first-served
basis. Participants must be 21-39, attend
pre- and post-TribeFest programs and
write about their experience.
Potential attendees can learn
more about the event and how to
apply for the subsidy by attending a
recruitment happy hour from 6-8 p.m.
on Wednesday, Jan. 8. More details will
be announced soon.
“TribeFest 2012 was an amazing
couple of days meeting with your peers
and peer leaders and bouncing ideas
off of each other for how to make your
community stronger,” Kogut said. “The
Jewish world we live in is so small,
and it’s great to really get out and meet
so many like-minded people. The fact

program itself is worth the trip, and the

in on the fun a no-brainer!”
Through presentations by dynamic
leaders in politics, entertainment,
music, art, food, religion and other
aspects of Jewish life, TribeFest will
offer attendees ways to connect to their
own Judaism and explore how they see
themselves as part of the community.
TribeFest attendees will stay at the New
Orleans Sheraton on Canal Street -
walking distance to the French Quarter
and other area attractions.
“TribeFest is a brilliant opportunity
to explore, network and connect with
Jews and Jewish organizations from
around the country and the world.
It offers community, culture and
connection,” Weiner said. “At TribeFest,
I met leaders, entrepreneurs and heroes

being jewish matters
When there is hardship anywhere in
the world it touches all of us. That is
why when Typhoon Haiyan devastated
portions of Southeast Asia, particularly
the Philippines, in early November,
affecting more than 16 million people!
> the Jewish Federation of Greater
Houston did what it always does in times of tragedy. It joined
with other Federations around the country in launching an
emergency campaign to send help. The money raised here in
Houston supported the American Jewish Joint Distribution
Committee’s relief efforts. In one of the worst storms on record,
more than 6,000 perished and nearly 4.1 million were displaced.
With your help the JDC raised nearly $2 million and brought
medical aid, food, supplies and comfort to the survivors.
