Palo Duro Dons Ranked
As Major Threat In District
---ALBERT ARRIOLA_
PALO DURO, who blanked Dumas 35-0 in the opener, and
rolled over El Paso Irvin, 61-12, Saturday has been ranked as a
major threat to the District 4-AAAA crown this year. Coronado,
who has been picked to finish second, has had trouble in defeat-
ing Andrews 20-16.
Lubbock High snapped its victory drouth by downing Odessa
Ector, 13-7, as the Eagles lost their second con-
secutive outing as a 3-AAAA school.
ONE OF THE OLDEST rivalries will be
renewed Friday when the Golden Sandstorms
invade the Hub City for their 44th get together
With the Lubbock High Westerners.
Lubbock High owns 10 triumphs—the last one
coming in 1964—and two games have ended in
ties. Amarillo had 31 triumphs against the
Westerners.
CURRENTLY LUBBOCK High and Amarillo have 1-1 records
which proves that both teams are capable of winning.
Of all the district teams in the 3-AAAA race only four teams
are undefeated. These teams include Plainview, Palo Duro,
Monterey and Tascosa. Only the Borger Bulldogs have lost their
first two outings this year.
PERMIAN GAVE A shocking surprise to Cooper by defeating
them by a score of 6-0 in their meeting last week. Cooper has
been favored to win their district this year.
Estacado has shown a tremendous effort this year by winning
both of their games. The Matadors are in district competition
for the first time.
LUBBOCK HIGH DID not relinquish its lead in the Odessa
Ector game last week and therefore was able to defeat the Eagles
by a score of 13-7. This is the first win for Coach Tommy Stone,
who has done a wonderful job for the Westerners this season.
In college football this week, most of the teams surprised every-
one by ending up their games in a tie situation. Texas Tech
and Cincinnati ended up the game in a 10-10 tie. Texas which
was a slight favorite to defeat the Houston Cougars, had to
settle for a 20-20 tie.
TEXAS A&M LOST its first game of the season to the LSU
Tigers by a score of 13-12. The Aggies were last year’s South-
west Conference winners and are picked to do it again.
