Federal laws protect Bellaire Jewish Center from citations, counsel says

A rabbi who lives in Bellaire, Texas,
is baffled by a pair of citations he
received from the city, accusing the
center he founded of violating a zoning
ordinance, despite previously being
told there was no violation, according
to the rabbi and his legal counsel.
Twice in the past three months, the
City of Bellaire has cited Rabbi Gavriel
Jacknin’s Bellaire Jewish Center
allegedly for operating a “church” out
of the family’s residential home at 5403
Braeburn Dr.
The Bellaire Jewish Center
is located at 5200 West Loop S.
Established in October 2010, BJC
serves the educational and spiritual
needs of local Jews, though it is not a
synagogue (or “church,” in common
terms,) according to the center’s
website and its founders, Rabbi
Jacknin and his wife, Michal.
As Shomer Shabbos Jews, the
Jacknins occasionally entertain small
groups of some five to 15 people at
their home for Shabbat and Torah
study They also host a large Chanukah
celebration at their home each year.

exhibition of “American Heroes:

Scheduled related events include:
• “Honorable Journey” and film
discussion, moderated by Christine
Sato-Yamazaki, takes place on
Friday, Dec. 20, from 10:30 a.m.-noon
at Holocaust Museum Houston.
The film charts the 70-year
struggle of Japanese-Americans who
came of age during World War II.
This event is by invitation only.
• “A Flicker in Eternity” film
screening and discussion with
Lane Hirabayashi is on Saturday,
Jan. 11, 2-4 p.m., and takes place
at the Asia Society Texas Center,
1370 Southmore Blvd. The film is the
coming-of-age tale of Stanley Hayami,
a talented young teenager caught

Houston community
responds to Promise
of Hope appeal
Since the Jewish Federation of Greater
Houston rolled out the new Promise of Hope
appeal on Nov. 21, the community has stepped
up to support its most needy
Promise of Hope, chaired by Amb. Arthur
Schechter, aims to raise $10 million in the next
five years to support the ongoing financial aid
need of families and individuals struggling to
get by, month to month. Since 2009, there have
been more than 1,500 Jews living in Houston
who have turned to the Federation’s partner

Students learn computer programming
through games,
problem solving

Local day school students are learning the
science behind the computer games they love to
play.
Dec. 9-13 was National Computer Science Week,
where kids in kindergarten through fifth grade at
Beth Yeshurun Day School were introduced to the
basics of computer programming.
The curriculum, supplied by code.org, a
BYDS second-graders Lillie Kleban and Max Grinstein use
step-by-step commands to solve mazes on the computer. See Students on Page 4
