lasting friendships and created job opportunities. One
past WTBR boy is presently an evangelist serving in
South America, another ex-boy has his own suc-
cessful roofing business in San Angelo after serving
four years in the Army. One boy, Marine PFC Allan
Scranton, gave his life for his country in Vietnam in
1966. The present gymnasium and student center at
the Ranch is named Scranton Memorial Hall in
Allan's memory. Allan's brother, Pat, visits the
Ranch frequently and is employed in the oil field.
One of our past boys has been with an airline in San
Angelo as an agent for a number of years, getting his
start with one of our close supporters. Some have at-
tended college to become a male nurse, and even
some majoring in social work with the intention of
themselves getting into child care someday. The
houseparents at West Texas Boys Ranch become
very devoted to their charges, and are very much in-
volved in their present and future lives. Most of the
boys need to learn a trade or ranch work to prepare
themselves to make a living, as many of them are
unable to finish high school due to many years of
neglect in their academic lives. The three "R's" are
stressed in the Library/Learning Center to supple-
ment their public school studies in order to prepare
them to apply for employment when they leave the
