Tommy BvruM would like • tip
’ cm bow lo pitch 10 Johnny Ltpun.
Upon, Detrr.lt shortstop, twice
this season has blasted Byrnes’
hopes of pitching a non-run, ms-
hit game
Johnny first played the vtllian’s
role last May 8. Byrnes had a no-
hitter going through six innings,
• but Llpon greeted the New York
Yankee lefthander with a single to
start the seventh. He collected
the second of Detroit's three hits in
. the ntnth, as Byrnes came through
with a lt-0 victory.
Johnny Lipon was all that stood
between Tommy Byrnes and a no-
bitter laet night at Yankee sta-
dium m Tommy hurled the shut-
out against Uhe Tigers.
, Margin of One Feet
Came the eighth—and up strode
Upon. Byrnes threw a high inside
curve. Upon swung and the ball
. sailed on a line toward ^he left
field comer. It landed jus! inside
the foul line—fair by a foot The
partisan crowd groaned as Lipon
crossed first with a single—the
only hit of the game by the Tigers.
Byrnes was only one of the seven
lgfthanders who came through
yesterday. Rookie southpaw Man*
» rice McDermott pitched the Bos-
ton Red Sox to a three-hit, 7-0,
victory over the St. Louis Browns.
Alex Kellner—another rookie
• southpaw—registered his 10th tri-
umph pitching the Phildelphia
Athletics to an 11-4 victory over
the Chicago White Sox.
Dodgers Drub Reds
A left hander—Joe Ratten—
• kept the Brooklyn Dodgers in first
place in the National league, pitch-
ing the Brooks to a 7-2 triumph
over the Cincinnati Reds.
• Lefty Howie Pnllet enabled the
St. Louis Cardinals to stay within
a half-game of the Dodgers, pitch-
ing the Redbirds to a 10-6 triumph
over the New York Giants.
Southpaw Warren Spahn chalked
up his ninth victory, pitching the
Boston Braves to a 12-5 victory
over the Chicago Cubs.
Lefty Curt Simmons went all
the way for Philadelphia as the
Phils swamped the Pittsburgh Pi-
rates, 9-3.
Early Wynn was the only right-
hander to notch a victory, but
. even he needed help from a left-
hander, getting it from Frank Pa-
pish in the ninth to receive credit
for Cleveland's 4-3 triumph ovei
• the Washington Senators.
