Final Hurdle Is Cleared
For Orange Levee Project
The final hurdle in suiting
work on an emergency flood con-
trol levee bordering Little
Bayou by the Corps of
which has been bogged down for
three months, was being cleared
today. ,
A check for $4,320 covering the
purchase of a perpetual easement
an 4 1/3 acres from Stevens Maf-
rtge, Houston real estate develop-
er, was turned over today to City
Atty. E. L. Reid. City Secreury
Charles Cottle said the check had
been issued and only the final
work needs to be consumated.
Both this easement, made out
to the City of Orange, and a work-
ing agreement necessary for
construction of the levee have
been signed by Mafrige and are
in the office of Frank W. Hust-
myre, his attorney. The working
agreement is made'In connection

A hitch developed on securing
the additional land needed follow-
ing evaluation of Jilafrige's 114-
acre tract which was bought on
a bid last June for around $750
per acre. It went on Vie tax rolls
for $3,000 and $200 per acre
evaluation depending on the land
location. Part of the acreage near
the bayou was labeled as $200
land Mafrige contended this
evaluation was too high and de-
clined to grant the. necessary-
easements at that time.
