A most deplorable accident happen-
ed Sunday night. While Tommie and
Edgar Hans and Cornelius Mangold
were riding up the main street, in
a small car, the driver lost control
of it and crashed into the rear end
of a large touring Buick car, whic i
was parked by the side of the High-
way. The shock threw both brothers
through the windshield. Tommie sus-
tained several severe cuts on his
head and arm, and Edgar’s chin was
pretty badly cut, besides bruises to
his chest. Cornelius was sitting in the
middle and passed through the acci-
dent unhurt. •
Relatives received the sad news
Monday morning that Gladys Poer-
ner, aged fourteen years, the second
oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed.
Poerner of San Antonio, had died
early Monday morning, after a re-
lapse of the measles. We sincerely
areakfast was partaken of and the
rest of the day was pleasantly spent
in feasting and celebrating the happy
event. The young couple will make
their future home at LaCoste. We
join their many friends in wishing
them a long, a happy and prosperous
married life.

SAN ANTONIO, Tex., April 21.—
Enrollment for Citizen’s Military
Training Camps to be held this sum-
mer in the 8th Corps Area is pro-
gressing favorably and is consider-
ably ahead of last year, announced
Major General T. Q. Donaldson, the!
Corps Area Commander at Ft. Sam
Houston, today.
To date the six camps are approx-j
imately 65 per cent filled, with ap-
plications coming in at the rate of!
about 40 per day.
Compared with the eastern section '
of the United States, where many |
camps are already full, this seems
to be rather a poor showing, unless
one takes into consideration, the
great area covered by the States of i
Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Arizona
and New Mexico, which comprise the'
8th Corps Area.
I am sure the young men of this
section of t ie United States, said
General Donaldson, are just as ap-
preciative of the advantages and j
benefits of the month's summer train- i
ing offered them at Government cx-|
pense, as are their eastern brothers, I
and ti’.e apparent slowness in taking i
advantage of the Government's very,
gtnerous offer is due primarily to!
the greater length of time it takes'
to communicate between the various
centers of the Corps Area.
Last year, due to additional funds!
received late in June, continued Gen-j
eral Drnalds n, these headquarters;
were able to order to camp and to j
train some 500 more than the quota:
assigned by the War Department, and i
last minute applicants were not dis- j
appointed.
This year, the situation is differ*!
ent. The Secretary of War has an- j
nounced that no additional funds will I
be available, and the quota of 2,7001
assigned the 8th Corps Area cannot \
be exceeded.
This means that the young man j
who waits until the last minute will
undoubtedly be disappointed and the
only way for him to be sure of a
place in camp is to submit his ap-
plication at once.
Anyone interested should see Prof, j
W. N. Saathoff at the courthouse. He!
has application blanks and can furn
ish any information desired.
