Volunteers to comb beach for trash
By Bethany Baker
Beach lovers are urged to participate in the
7th Annual Texas Coastal Cleanup set for 9
a.m. to noon, this Saturday, Sept 19. Anyone
can be a “beach buddy” for the day by helping
with the effort to keep the beach clean.
Port Aransas beaches are described in bro-
chures as having “beautiful, white, sandy
beaches perfect for fun in the sun.” Volunteers
for the cleanup will help keep the truth in this
description, and even help pass legislation that
will further protect the Texas beaches.
The President, the U.S. Congress and the Gulf of Mexico, according to the Texas Gen-
federal Environmental Protection Agency have eral Land Office which is co-sponsoring the
designated 1992-93 as the Year of the Gulf of event with the Adopt-A-Beach Program. The

ing Port Aransas, thousands of people will be
making waves at the annual cleanup, collect-
ing literally hundreds of tons of trash. Plastics
are usually the most frequently found item but
other oddities that have turned up in past
cleanups include insect repellent from Japan,
Easier decorations from Mexico, a Singapore
“Sip-N-Pack” drink, a refrigerator, a crate of
chili, a bag of onions, two car doors, a lawn
mower, a washing machine top and two haz-
ardous waste drums.
In Port Aransas, hazardous waste is seldom
found. “Last year, we found a piece of syringe
and that’s all. We make sure the people know
not to pick it up, just to let us know and we will
take care of it,” said Pam Greene, coordinator
of the Port Aransas cleanup.
Nueces county has offered more assistance
with the clean up than in past years, according
to Greene. “Chris Lawrence at Nueces Coun ty
Beach Services has really, really, helped. And
ever since Carol Karter became county com-
missioner it has been a lot better. The county
now picks up what is collected and also gives
us containers to pul any hazardous medical
waste in. As long as it is helping in our area
(the county), she doesn’t quibble over who
does what.”
